In 2023 BioteCH4 handled 602,318 tonnes of waste, applied 416,732 tonnes of digestate to land, and generated 296,896 MWh of energy.


Hemswell Biogas is a large processor of food waste located in Lincolnshire and has been designed to handle a wide range of waste feedstocks and capable of producing 13.1MW energy generation.

Through a process called Anaerobic Digestion it utilises the waste as a raw material to create methane, which in turn is used to generate both gas and electricity that is 100% renewable and exported to the national grid.

Overall Purpose of the Role:

The Lead Operator is to review loads for the week and ensure available resources are used to maintain output to daily KPI's.

Ensuring that the Operator team receive and process incoming waste material ensuring that it is compliant with the permitted waste types in order to feed the plant accordingly, maximising energy output and cost effectiveness by smooth operation of the plant.

The role also gives responsibility of maintaining acceptable levels of hygiene and health and safety to site.

Essential criteria:

IOSH/NEBOSH H&S qualification or relevant experience, including writing of SOP's and Risk Assessments; Forklift, JCB and tele-truck certification and experience; Health and Safety awareness and associated understanding; IT literate; previous experience of leading a team; Previous plant operator skills.


The day to day activities include:

  • Operating de-packaging machinery consistently to optimise the recipe for the type of waste received and plant KPI's
  • To safely and effectively tip trailers of waste
  • To manage the cleanliness of the reception hall and overall site
  • Update and produce Standard Operating Procedures as required
  • To maintain equipment effectively including; greasing, routine maintenance checks.
  • To ensure that any equipment defects or lack of resources are reported to the Plant Manager and/or Engineering Supervisor
  • Cover the Process Operator role as required for breaks, sickness and annual leave
Plus any other duties which are assigned by the Plant Manager

Key Areas of Responsibility:

  • Receiving in and processing all types of waste vehicles that includes inspection
  • Review loads that arrive with a view of acceptance before paperwork is signed and when vehicles are to leave site. (If unsure, ask)
  • Contain and clear any spillages on site in an efficient and safe manner when required
  • Achieve acceptable levels of materials processed, based on the waste delivered and daily KPI's for the plant
  • Ensure vehicles leave the Reception Hall to the required hygiene standard.
  • Daily & weekly clean down and simple maintenance processes are conducted and logged (if required) on the specified paperwork
  • Workplace organisation & housekeeping in the Reception Hall and around the site
  • Review Standard Operating Procedure's and Risk Assessments and draft/amend as required
  • Ensuring provisions are in place to allow adherence of Animal Health & Environment Agency requirements (i.e. footbaths always in operation, no food waste is spilt outside the reception hall, not accepting food waste where the EWC code does not feature on our permitted list, doors not left open for prolonged periods etc.)
  • Completing daily Mechanical Handling Equipment checks on all vehicles
  • Ensuring the packaging waste within the Reception Hall goes into the correct streams for the daily skip movements (i.e. landfill, recycling etc.)
  • Support and monitor the digestate transfer operation as required
  • Support and monitor the oil separation process as required
  • Report any issues, shortages and problems to the correct lead
  • Actively promote and adhere to the Site Health & Safety policy in all work activities
  • Undertake any course of instruction necessary to obtain or maintain the required skill level for this role
