Western Link 2 HVDC Project is a multi-billion pound project, forming two HVDC links from southwest Scotland to Wales/Northwest England.

An Engineering Development Section Head within SP Transmission HVDC Projects manages and leads the team of professionals who will be responsible for developing, assessing, and providing detailed design, surveys (on and offshore), and consent applications for the Western Link 2 HVDC Project, taking the project to tendering and contract awards.

The postholder will also promote innovation and value driven engineering to reduce overall asset lifecycle costs and whole life Carbon footprint. They will be a key influencer in investment planning decisions for the development and delivery of the £5+bn Western Link 2.

This position has up to 3 direct reports with multiple indirect reports.

What you'll be doing

This is an exciting opportunity to work on the development of one of the largest infrastructure projects in the UK.

You will be using your engineering and commercial expertise to successfully lead and manage the delivery of cost-effective solutions within measurable project/programme timescales while ensuring regulatory financial allowances are achieved in respect of designs. Working closely with partner organisations.

This will involve:

  • Taking the lead across the project engineering disciplines for coordination of the production of the design freeze ensuring key dates are achieved.
  • Driving collaboration and Coordination with partner design team.
  • Ensuring plans are suitably resourced with Engineering resource and changes managed for the benefit of delivering business targets.
  • Making certain that all HSEQ policies are embedded within the engineering solutions delivered.
  • Maintaining compliance with all Engineering policies, standards and procedures.
  • Supporting the engineering requirements of the end-to-end project design process enabling the project to move to contact award.
  • Assisting with required engineering aspects of tender preparation and assessment of contract(s).
  • Work with SPEN and partner planning and consenting teams to undertake the required environmental assessment works including routing, surveys, prepare consent application, and undertake consultations for onshore and offshore activities.
  • Developing and delivering auditable engineering, risk registers decision logs and governance processes.
  • Identifying, delineating, and resolving Engineering problems using Engineering methodology where appropriate. Situations will arise where complex problems cannot be resolved by process and a creative and innovative approach will be required to resolve.
  • Proactively approaching continuous improvement by proposing and implementing improvement initiatives that are not obvious to others and will address difficult situations.
  • Making decisions for and/or proposals with respect to defining engineering scope in the Pre-Engineering phase of project.
  • Advising the business on, and supports the identification of, new requirements which the business has been previously unaware of.
  • Delivering performance management for a team of professional engineers in line with HR policy.
  • Ensuring adequate training, coaching, and mentoring is in place to further advance the knowledge, skills and experience of the team.

What you'll bring

You will be a strong leader with a solution-based approach to problem-solving and the ability to be reactive and flexible. Due to the level of stakeholder engagement, you will be able to form effective working relationships at all levels and influence and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders.

As a manager, it is essential that you are strong communicator (written, verbal and presentation), be able to effectively motivate others and have excellent organisation and planning skills to direct a team.

As an engineer, you will have the ability to investigate and understand technical characteristics of associated equipment.

You will have experience in implementing new technologies and engineering solutions to achieve reductions in project lifetime costs and have a strong focus on sustainability including carbon reduction, circular economy principles and social return.

To be successful, as a minimum you will have:

  • Degree in an Engineering discipline with relevant experience.
  • Chartered Engineer Status (or working towards)
  • Understanding of Environmental Impact Assessment and consenting processes
  • Experience in designing electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstratable management experience.
  • Working knowledge of HSEQ and sustainability associated with engineering design and construction.
