We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced and enthusiastic Grounds Person to join our Premises Team, Monday-Friday, 37.5 hours per week.

Shift pattern is 7.30 am to 4.30 pm (Summer) and 8 am-4 pm (Winter). You are also entitled to 1 hour lunch break (unpaid).


Reporting to the Grounds Supervisor, the overall purpose of the role is to operate as an effective member of the Grounds Team by ensuring all grounds and games surfaces throughout the school sites are maintained to a high standard deemed acceptable by the School, ensuring compliance to Health and Safety regulations.


The overall purpose of your role is to operate as an effective member of the Buildings, Grounds and Maintenance Team by ensuring all grounds and games surfaces throughout the Trust's grounds are maintained to a high standard deemed acceptable by the School.

Further, ensuring that tools and machinery are maintained in line with safety standards. Please see the Special Note at the bottom of this document.

MAIN DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
Purpose of Role


The overall purpose of the role is to operate as an effective member of the Grounds Team by ensuring all grounds and games surfaces throughout the school sites are maintained to a high standard deemed acceptable by the School, ensuring compliance to Health and Safety regulations.

Further, your overall purpose involves ensuring that tools and machinery are maintained in line with safety standards. Please see the Special Note at the bottom of this document.

Key Duties

Maintain to a high standard the following:

  • all-weather hockey pitch
- athletics track
- tennis courts
- the jump pits
- shot putt area
- rugby and cricket pitches

  • To correctly prepare for games, set out and clear away goal nets, tennis nets, posts, athletic and other games equipment as required.
  • Maintain outdoor games equipment in a good state of repair and in a usable condition
  • To inflate rugby balls, paint shot putts.
  • To report any damage to sports equipment or sports areas to the Director of PE and any damage to machinery and tools for which the grounds men are responsible to the Grounds Team Leader.
  • To inform the Head of Grounds of any grounds damage or known disease at any of the school sites.
  • To carry out weekly checks on all machinery and tools and carry out basic maintenance as appropriate. A logbook of activities should be kept for review with Head of Grounds.
  • To maintain all tarmacadam/grass area edges and keep free from weeds, overgrown grass etc.
  • To maintain, and keep free from litter and debris, all fence lines, embankments, copses and trees, shrubberies, gardens (excluding those of the staff houses where applicable) pathways and drains.
  • To maintain bus bay and assist with PE car park and stone areas around sports buildings, keeping them weedfree and tidy.
  • To help with gardening duties eg secret garden and conservation areas at Beaton Road.
  • To maintain, paint and keep to a high standard any machinery and storage buildings at Beaton Road sports field.
  • To ensure all pitches are lined timeously.
  • To timeously and correctly prepare for games, set out and clear away goal nets, tennis nets, posts, athletic and other games equipment as required.
  • To inflate rugby balls, paint hockey balls. Maintain outdoor games equipment in a good state of repair and in a usable condition.
  • To report any damage to sports equipment or sports areas to the Director of Sport and PE and any damage to machinery and tools for which the Grounds Person are responsible to the Head of Grounds
  • To inform the Head of Grounds of requirements for fertilisers, grass seed etc for grounds at Beaton Road and Norwood.
  • To maintain an inventory of all machinery and tools and to keep it available for inspection on request.
  • To ensure that all machinery, tools and equipment required for this work is properly maintained in good working order and in compliance with all current safety standards and that all chemicals are stored and used in accordance with current COSHH regulations.
