What it's like to work here

We're bigger than you think, we're more complicated than we appear and we're larger scale than you'd imagine. We've got passionate people in all our teams, and we've got so much more we want to achieve. We're for ever, for everyone and we really mean that. We don't want to stop at 5.5 million members and we want everyone to feel welcome and enjoy access to our places, so we need to reach new audiences in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them without losing the hearts and minds of those that are already with us.

Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon and there will be an expectation for you to attend the office. However, there is flexibility on where you are based at other times. You will be required to work at a National Trust location for 40-60% of your working week. This will be discussed in more detail at interview.

What you'll be doing

We are a small team with a varied remit, so the role will provide lots of opportunities for learning and development. You’ll report to one of our People Relations Managers whilst supporting the wider team’s work.

You'll help research, develop, and communicate new and revised policies and guidance for our staff and volunteers, focusing mainly on staff. You'll also provide advice to the People Service Centre as they support colleagues across the organisation with a range of employment and volunteering issues.

Who we're looking for

You can view the full role profile for this vacancy in the document attached. You do not need to have all the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what is possible in this role.

We would love to hear from you if you have:

  • An ability to absorb, remember and confidently advise on a wide range of HR and volunteering policies, procedures and employment/volunteering law.
  • Experience of working in Human Resources (HR)/volunteer administration and looking for the next step in your career, sideways or upwards into the People Relations arena.
  • The confidence to work independently with an attention to detail, carry out research, explore options, their benefits and drawbacks and to present findings in a coherent way.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal with an ability to convey complex information in a simple way to colleagues at all grades and level of knowledge. This may include coaching small groups.
  • Competent in a range of IT skills. We predominantly use Microsoft packages including Excel, Word and SharePoint.
  • An ability to multi-task and be comfortable with switching from task to task to meet objectives.

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve.
