Research Associate

Norwich, United Kingdom University of East Anglia Full time

part-time 0.5 FTE, fixed term for 24 months

Starting salary from £29,605 per annum (pro rata), dependent on skills and experience, with an annual increment up to £36,024 per annum (pro rata)

Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate to undertake research in collaboration with Professor Nitya Rao and international partners in order to better understand the deployment of innovative climate resilient and nutritious crops.

This research is part of a wider project entitled “Leveraging genetic innovations for accelerated breeding of climate resilient and nutritious crops”, funded by FCDO as part of the new UK-CGIAR Centre and launched by the UK Prime Minister in November 2023. The project seeks to accelerate the development and deployment of improved crops through modern approaches to breeding.

You will help coordinate a crucial work-package within the project which concerns the translation of breeding outputs into societal outcomes through a translational ecosystem including policy-makers, farmers and consumers. It is expected that the research undertaken will lead to a better understanding of historical attempts to deploy improved varieties, farmer (especially women) preferences in this context and likely future barriers/enablers to adoption.

You will coordinate research activity in three countries (Egypt, Pakistan and Kenya) working seamlessly with local partners in ICARDA, CIMMYT, ARC, QUA and KALRO. You will be responsible for the collation, analysis and synthesis of research outputs from different partners and the communication of results within and beyond the project consortium. You will lead on the overall reporting of results to funders and in the communication of results to academic and non-academic audiences. Crucially, you will ensure that research outputs contribute to outcomes through the project’s theory of change.

The research will be based at the University of East Anglia in the School of Global Development.

You will have a PhD or equivalent in a subject relevant to the research project along with significant previous experience of independent research in a global development context. You must have excellent communication skills and experience of communicating research results to both academic and non-academic audiences. You should have experience of working in the Global South. You must have a strong commitment to achieving impact from research.

This part-time (0.5 FTE) post is available from 1 September 2024 on a fixed term basis for 24 months.

UEA offers a variety of flexible working options and we encourage applications from individuals who would prefer a flexible working pattern including annualised hours, compressed working hours, part time, job share, term-time only and/or hybrid working. Details of preferred hours should be stated in the personal statement and will be discussed further at interview.

Further information on our great benefits package, including 44 days annual leave inclusive of Bank Holidays and additional University Customary days (pro rata for part-time), can be found on our benefits page.

Closing date: 29 July 2024

The University holds an Athena Swan Silver Institutional Award in recognition of our advancement towards gender equality.
