Research Scientist in Mesoscale Air-sea Interactions in the EERIE Project

Found in: beBee S GB - 2 weeks ago

Reading, United Kingdom University of Reading Full time

We are seeking to employ a post-doctoral Research Scientist for the European Eddy-Rich Earth System Models (EERIE) project, funded by Horizon Europe, and by UKRI.

The post holder’s research will advance our understanding of how the ocean mesoscale interacts with the deep troposphere, focussing on the mechanisms that emerge in eddy-rich models, linking the atmosphere and ocean. The innovation and ambition of the research comprise upscale effects: the umbrella objective in EERIE is the discovery and characterisation of how air-sea coupling at the mesoscale affects global climate variability. The EERIE project offers unprecedented access to a wealth of novel observations and multi-model centennial simulations. EERIE research also contributes directly to the design of experiments for CMIP7, particularly in defining the new HighResMIPv2 protocol, and significantly contribute to IPCC AR7.

The post holder will be joining the Global High Resolution Climate Modelling (HRCM) programme, a key strategic partnership between the National Centre for Atmospheric Science and at the Met Office Hadley Centre. HRCM have built and are currently exploiting global coupled model configurations – based on HadGEM3 – aiming to investigate scale interactions in the climate system, particularly at the mesoscale (10km and sub-10km, in both atmosphere and ocean).

EERIE is underpinned by long-term, close collaborations with major research centres across Europe (CNRS in France, AWI, DKRZ and MPI in Germany, BSC in Spain, Met Office and ECMWF in the UK), as well as leading research groups (Brest, Louvain, ETHZ, Oxford, Reading) and within the UK National Centre for Atmospheric Science. The post holder will work very closely with the Met Office, particularly the K-Scale project, with the National Oceanographic Centre, as well as with project partners at ECMWF. A key aspect of EERIE collaborations will be idealised experimentation to develop process understanding, particularly in terms of isolating the roles of ocean eddies, boundary currents, frontal structures.

You will have:

  • A PhD in Mathematics, Physics, Physical Science or equivalent research experience.
  • Experience of analysis and visualisation of large and complex scientific datasets.
  • Strong computer programming skills with experience in Fortran and Python.
  • Knowledge of, or evidence of a serious interest in atmosphere and ocean dynamics and physics.

Interview date - 25 June 2024

Atmospheric turbulence is the leading weather-related cause of aircraft accidents and incidents. Clear-air turbulence, being invisible to the eye and undetectable by the onboard weather radar, is especially hazardous. This project will test the hypothesis that hydrodynamic instability diagnostics may have predictive skill at forecasting clear-air turbulence...
