The Role & Key Responsibilities

The File Support Trainer will be part of the File Support Team and will be responsible for designing and delivering training on specialist case file build including one to one tuition. The role is designed specifically to support the File Support Team and practitioners across Sussex Police.

In this role you will design, develop and deliver Case File, Charging standards & Criminal Justice training to meet internal and external requirements both now and in the future.

You will also produce, maintain and update lesson plans in line with National Police Chiefs Council, the College of Policing and Director General Guidance and other relevant legislation / guidance.

The role expects you to be accountable for and be the driving force behind Charging Standards improvement, and compliance with Director General (DG) / National File Standards.

As a File Support Trainer your duties will also include:

  • Deliver training when there is change to existing Criminal Justice processes or new Criminal Justice processes are adopted.
  • Evaluate staff to ensure that they meet and maintain the required skills to perform the role. Monitor performance, recommend and deliver training when required to ensure staff maintain operationally competent.
  • Work with colleagues in Learning and Development and Criminal Justice to ensure staff are competent and able to perform the required role.
  • Establish effective working relationships with key stakeholders and partners to implement a collaborative approach to learning and development. Manage, maintain and ensure the attendance of guest speakers when required.
  • Maintain and deliver a professional work environment and behaviour at all times. Recognise, supervise and challenge inappropriate behaviour displayed in the training environment in a professional manner, ensuring that Force standards of behaviour are maintained at all times.
  • Report and support poor performance procedures when required. Identify and report health and safety concerns at the earliest opportunity.
  • Support National Working Groups within the South East to maintain and identify effective work practices. Where possible attend meetings and assist in the development and of strategic plans within Sussex Police.
  • To undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and character of work as may be reasonably required, including specific duties of a similar or lesser graded post.
Skills & Experience

We are seeking individuals with the following skills, knowledge and/or experience:

  • Educated to GCSE level Maths and English or equivalent level experience
  • The post holder must have a Training Essentials Programme (TEP) qualification, or the willingness to achieve it.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and verbal communication - confident communicator with an ability to engage quickly and build effective working relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders. Ability to competently contract, influence, negotiate and articulate options to all levels.
  • Good working knowledge of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 and experience of working within a Case File build/Criminal Justice environment.
  • Proven ability to review working practices, identify and review performance and compare this to operational competencies.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of diversity, with the ability to embed this knowledge throughout all learning and development programmes.
  • Ability to be flexible and able to critically evaluate training packages, being innovative, developing and implementing changes when required.
  • Proven experience of working in a security conscious environment with confidential material alongside an understanding of handling sensitive material.
  • Be fully conversant with Microsoft Office or similar products and have accurate keyboard skills together with Exceptional presentation skills and ability to facilitate and deliver training.
  • Sound understanding of the Police Service and the context in which it operates.
