About the role:

This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious professional seeking to develop a career in scientific, research and administrative management to join the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Imperial College. You will gain hands-on experience in coordinating national-level public health research in a leading academic institution and will manage a broad portfolio of grants.

A key part of the portfolio is the MRC Centre for Environment and Health, which is  funded by the Medical Research Council and has strong links with the National Institute for Health Research Health Protection Research Units (NIHR HPRU) in Chemical and Radiation Threats and Hazards and in Environmental Exposures and Health. The Centre is recognised as an international centre of excellence for research and training on the health effects of environmental pollutants and the translation of this knowledge to inform national and international policies to improve health.

What you would be doing:

Working with both the Department Manager and the Centre Scientific Manager, you will provide organisational and administrative support to a portfolio of related scientific grants, including the MRC Centre for Environment and Health.

You will be responsible for the financial and project management of several large, collaborative projects with external partners, managing timelines and deliverables. You will lead in developing, tracking and monitoring spend on grant budgets, reporting on scientific progress to funders, and coordinating recruitment of key staff, as well as being proactive in identifying funding opportunities and preparing grant submissions.

For the Centre you will play a key role in its coordination, working with the Scientific Manager to help the scientists appointed to deliver the research programmes of the Centre. Key responsibilities include working with the Centre’s Training Programme Coordinator to deliver recruitment and career development activities for Centre PhD students, researchers and fellows; organising a programme of public engagement events; maintaining effective communications within the Centre and externally, and facilitating collaboration activities and scientific meetings across the Centre and with key stakeholders.

What we are looking for:

  • You will have Masters level qualifications or equivalent experience in a scientific discipline preferably relevant to the objectives of the Centre, be highly motivated, and have excellent administrative, organisational and inter-personal skills.
  • Knowledge of project management best practice, budget management skills and the ability to produce concise written material for scientific or administrative purposes to tight deadlines are essential, as is the ability to work independently across a broad portfolio.
