The James Paget University Hospital is seeking to appoint a Consultant Ophthalmologist with specialist interest in Glaucoma, as a replacement post. The Consultant will have responsibility for providing a specialist glaucoma and comprehensive ophthalmic service in conjunction with their consultant colleagues. We are dedicated to providing high quality care for the population of South East Norfolk and North East Suffolk. The post is based at the James Paget Hospital, with outreach clinics at Beccles, as outlined in the job plan (see above).

The position provides an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified specialist to actively contribute to the further development of a modern Ophthalmology service within this highly regarded Trust, with its wide range of acute and community services, which will afford high professional visibility. The successful candidate will have a first class opportunity to build a strong reputation as an Ophthalmologist.

Main duties of the job

The Department
The outpatient department is run by Sister Julie Mitchell / Sister Louise Nunney and is well-equipped, with:

Nine consulting rooms, each containing standard ophthalmic instruments Two orthoptic rooms Photographic room Laser treatment room Visual field examination room Treatment room.

Also available in the department are:-

Humphrey (x4) VF analyzers. Ellex pattern frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser, Ellex Nd:YAG laser, and SLT laser A and B Ultrasound standardized echography Zeiss IOLmaster biometry (x2) Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue test Digital Retinal camera(KOWA) and wide-field OPTOS Camera HRA2 Fluorescein, ICG and Autofluorescence camera Digital Anterior segment camera Topcon 3-D OCT Spectralis OCT MACHINES 4 at JPUH site AND 1 OCTA Angiography system at Beccles. Auto-refractor Galilei Scheimflug Corneal Tomography Corneal Specular Microscopy MICS cataract surgery equipment - Bausch & Lomb Stellaris (x2)

About us

The Trust provides comprehensive acute care for the population of Great Yarmouth, Lowestoft and the South Waveney area and for many visitors to the area. This acute care provided from the James Paget University Hospital site at Gorleston is supported by other community services at the Newberry Centre, Kirkley Rise North Lowestoft, and outreach clinics. The Trust serves a population of approximately 230,000, with 500 beds, 3,370 members of staff, both full and part time and a budget of £129 million per annum. We are a University Hospital with a medical school training the next generation of health professionals and developing research.

The James Paget University Hospital is a high performing hospital with a history of strong performance both financially and in terms of achieving national and local targets. The Trust has successfully undertaken several national pilots. Job responsibilities

Main Duties

1. Provision with Consultant colleagues of a service to the James Paget University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness and the proper functioning of the department 2. Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in Consultant on-call rota where applicable 3. Cover for colleagues annual leave and other authorised absences 4. Any responsibility which relates to a special interest 5. Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff 6. Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally 7. Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD 8. Involvement in research 9. Managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate 10. Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust or services provided by the Trust for other agencies, e.g. the prison service.

Education and Qualifications
Essential

MBBS or Basic Medical Degree FRCOphth or equivalent Inclusion on the Specialist Register of GMC and/or hold CCT or have an agreed date for it which is within 6 months of the date of interview. Full GMC Registration

Glaucoma Fellowship or equivalent experience Proven Clinical experience in Ophthalmology, with a broad experience of the specialty Ability to carry out high volume cataract surgery Ability to organise and prioritise work effectively Able to plan and develop the service Experience of working in and leading a multi disciplinary team, balancing departmental and personal objectives
