Job summary

We are looking to recruit a Specialist doctor in the department of Trauma and Orthopaedics with a special interest in Lower Limb Surgery.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for outpatient clinics(orthopaedic clinic, fracture clinic and a special interest clinic) and will beallocated two theatre sessions for planned orthopaedic cases and onesession for trauma cases.

The successful candidates will be expected to supply cover for theircolleagues on a mutually agreed basis for annual leave and otherauthorised absence.

All senior doctors have continued responsibility for the care of patients intheir charge and for the proper function of the department. They areexpected to undertake appropriate administrative duties.

All Specialists at the James Paget University Hospital are required toengage in clinical audit and clinical governance activities. This ensuresstandards of clinical care are maintained and demonstrated.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Provision within the organisation of the department of acomprehensive Trauma and Orthopaedic service to the Trust, withresponsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illnessand the proper functioning of the department.

2. Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in consultant oncallrota where applicable.

3. Cover for colleagues annual leave and other authorised absences.

4. Any responsibility which relates to a special interest.

5. Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.

6. Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination andaccreditation duties as required and for contributing toundergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical educationactivity, locally and nationally.

7. Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governanceprocesses and in CPD.

8. Involvement in research.

9. Managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate.

10. Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of JamesPaget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust or servicesprovided by the Trust for other agencies, the prison service.

11. Share the Orthopaedic workload with colleagues.

12. Provide a consultation and advisory service to medical colleagues inother specialities in the Trust.

13. Take part in the Royal College of Surgeons continuing medicaleducation programme. The Trust will provide study leave expensesin line with national terms and conditions of service.

14. Play a full part in the teaching and audit activities of the department.

15. Deploy unallocated, flexible professional time on liaison, emergencywork, travel, continuing clinical responsibility, teaching, research,medical audit, inter-disciplinary meetings and continuing professionaldevelopment.

16. Liaison with colleagues in other specialties and with management toachieve such a service.

17. Administrative duties associated with the care of patients and therunning of the Trauma and Orthopaedic service.

18. The provision of advice, via professional and management structuresat Divisional and Trust level, on the short- and long-term planning ofcomprehensive health provision for the local population.

19. Participation, as required, in the instruction of all professionalgroups, including the department's own postgraduate programme.

20. The provision of cover, on a reciprocal basis, in the absence ofdepartmental colleagues in order to ensure the maintenance of aTrauma and Orthopaedics service and continuity of the departmentscommitment to the Trusts Major Incident Plan.

21. Maintenance, via a process of continuing professional developmentof the knowledge and skills relevant to the post.

22. Acceptance of and compliance with the departments and Trustsprogrammes for Clinical Governance, CPD and Medical Audit.

The trust is working towards 7-day working and the successful candidatewill be expected to work in accordance with the departments 7-day workproposal which includes working over some of the weekends for electivelists in addition to the on-call commitment.

There is an on-call commitment (category A) for providing an emergencyservice in Orthopaedics on a shared basis with other Consultants withinthe Department.

The current on-call commitment is a 1:9 week on-call with prospectivecover. The on-call is from Friday Friday. Weekend trauma meeting, wardround, fracture clinic and operating are done each day. There is adedicated trauma list on Saturday morning.
