The Brain Cancer Virtual Institute (BCVI) at the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Cambridge is looking for a Research Assistant to coordinate sample collection and processing for the ICARUS Biorepository, the UK's largest brain tumour bioresource. 

Led by Mr Richard Mair, ICARUS (Integrated, Clinically-Augmented Repository for Universal Sampling) houses thousands of samples from a range of healthy volunteers and patients with a variety of neurological and neurosurgical conditions. ICARUS provides bespoke tissue, cell lines, liquid biopsies and associated data for multiple fundamental science and translational studies, both nationally and internationally, including the Minderoo Precision Brain Tumour Programme, Wellcome LEAP Delta tissue and CRUK Grand Challenges. 

The post will perform and develop human biosampling (frozen tissue, dissociated cell sorting and liquid biopsy samples) alongside the derivation of cell lines, from multiple patients in clinic and the operating theatre. This post will help to support this exciting resource for the broader brain tumour research and human cell atlas communities. 

Key responsibilities

Sample collection, processing and storage Co-ordination and management of sample collection (fresh tissue, FACS, liquid biopsy) Responsible for processing, storage, retrieval and disposal of clinical material Generation of cell lines and storage thereof Ensure protocol and in compliance with the GCP and GCLP guidelines.

Awareness of legal, ethical and professional issues surrounding consent and management of human tissue samples.

Act as the main contact point for monitors/sponsors for all data related issues.

Data management

To complete data entry tasks associated with sample acquisition and processing using established standard operating procedures (Achiever Medical) To participate in the preparations for potential audits and/or inspections by research governing bodies.

Communication

Develop and maintain good relationships, communication and team work with Principal Investigators and all other clinical and non-clinical staff involved in the conduct of specific studies.

Liaise with relevant laboratories and departments to coordinate sample transfer for processing and analysis in accordance with study protocols.

Service Maintenance and Development

To assist in the implementation of standard operating procedures that ensure sample collection conforms to GCP and GCLP requirements.

To troubleshoot laboratory issues by facilitating repairs/maintenance of equipment, stock control, creation or re-negotiation of service contracts, coordination of minor works and freezer organisation.

Planning and Organising

Plan the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate; plan and manage own research activity in collaboration with others; contribute to planning of joint research projects led by principal investigator. 

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 March 2026 in the first instance.
