Research Software Engineer for AI in Chemistry

Liverpool, United Kingdom University of Liverpool Full time

An exciting opportunity for a Software Engineer role is available as part of the project team for AlChemy - a new partnership between the University of Liverpool, Imperial College London, and a large consortium of academic and industrial partners. AIChemy has was funded to promote the development of novel AI methods and to transform the uptake of AI in the chemistry community. The consortium brings together experts across AI and both experimental and computational chemistry. This Hub will promote connectivity of the broader community, training, and networking, as well as funding state-of-the-art research.

Based at University of Liverpool’s Material Innovation Factory (MIF), you will have the opportunity to be involved in the design and implementation of novel digital technologies in collaboration with a wide range of academic and industrial partners, and you will contribute to the Hub’s success by developing innovative software, promoting the importance of good software engineering, and enabling transformative research. You will work under general direction with a clear framework of accountability, while exercising substantial personal responsibility and autonomy, applying novel technologies to diverse and meaningful challenges. It is anticipated that the software engineer’s time will be split between biddable short-term projects, time on community projects (e.g. datathons and training) and infrastructure development. It is expected that the software engineer would be involved in the open process for community members to bid for software engineering projects.

The post will be ideal for an individual interested in working creatively across a range of projects and experts to promote the development and use of AI in Chemistry. The position will be based in the School of Physical Sciences, University of Liverpool, working closely with academics in Chemistry, Computer Science, Materials Innovation Factory, Digital Innovation Facility and other departments, as well as partners across the larger consortium. You will work closely with the leadership team, broader project management team, researchers and other software and data scientists to deliver on objectives.

The School of Physical Sciences is an Athena SWAN Silver Award holder and is committed to encouraging, developing and supporting women in their research and academic careers. We are working to create an inclusive environment which values a diverse workforce, and we recognise that many individuals value flexibility in their work/life balance. We strongly encourage applications from groups underrepresented within our workforce, in particular women.
