Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is an essential capability for development of modern systems and its use is being mandated on some major projects of national significance. Furthermore, large complex projects require coherence across the supply chain in both technical and business processes; the MBSE approach has at its heart a model that is regarded...

MBSE offers a framework for considering all aspects of a requirement, and its solution, in a logically integrated way that can persist and evolve through the whole lifecycle of a solution or product. As such, there is huge potential for effectively and efficiently tackling the real-life complexities of problems. However, this potential is most often not...

Warmer temperatures, extreme droughts, and more intensive convective storms are accelerating deterioration of earthworks, degrading resilience. Climate change is a major national security risk. UK critical infrastructure faces a climate adaptation deficit that will cost up to £1 billion/year by 2050. There is an urgent need to understand why, and anticipate...

The UK's built environment is responsible for around 25% of the UK's greenhouse emissions. Still, as a sector, it offers credible opportunities to mitigate the impact of climate change by applying net zero strategies, circular economy principles and other measures. PhD Studentship: Model Quality Assessment for MBSE or Enabling Effective MBSE with Optimal Organisational Structure

Loughborough, United Kingdom Loughborough University Full time

Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is becoming the accepted approach on many projects in complex systems and in some areas the approach is mandated for projects. As such, it is essential that the projects are structured and managed in such a way that the full benefits of MBSE are realisable. On the other hand, while practising MBSE expert judgement has been used to evaluate the quality of models, and there is no consensus on the specific characteristics of good quality models.

Co-funded by Leonardo and EPSRC, this project will either focus on (i) how organisational structure could enable more effective use of MBSE on projects; or (ii) how qualities of models can be assessed objectively with particular emphasis on MBSE supporting rapid development of products. The choice of project focus will be agreed between the student, Leonardo and Loughborough University during the first year of the programme.

The project is suitable for students who have a STEM background. The programme includes formal teaching in model-based systems engineering from Loughborough Systems Engineering experts and industrial leaders. Throughout the duration of the programme, the student will be hosted at one of Leonardo’s office locations for the majority of their time. This will provide the student with a suitable working environment, access to necessary infrastructure, and opportunities for interaction with stakeholders. The project will include the opportunity for collaboration on solving complex systems problems.

By completing the EngDoc programme, you will become a future thought leader in a demanding engineering field.

Note also that the successful candidate has to be eligible to obtain an SC (Security Check) Level clearance.

A minimum of an upper-class honours degree (2:1) or overseas equivalent in a STEM subject area, or equivalent relevant industrial experience.

Applications should be made online via the above ‘Apply’ button. Under programme name, select ‘Model-based Systems Engineering EngD’’ and quote the advert reference number FP-MH-2024-6 in your application.

To avoid delays in processing your application, please ensure that you submit your CV and the minimum supporting documents.

The following selection criteria will be used by academic schools to help them make a decision on your application.

This is an EngD studentship co-funded by Leonardo and EPSRC. The studentship is for 4 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £21,237 per annum including a £2k enhancement for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees at the UK rate.

The opportunity is subject to external funding. In the event that the funder withdraws prior to recruitment the studentship would be withdrawn.
