Clinical Fellow in General Surgery

This is a full-time Clinical Fellow post as in General Surgery from October 2024 for 12 months. This post is an approved GMC Training Post and can be recognized towards total training time for CESR application or SpR post.

The post will rotate between six months in two of three subspecialties: colorectal surgery, oesophagogastric surgery and emergency general surgery depending on the interest of the appointee and the service needs.

A candidate who is unable for personal reasons to undertake the duties of a whole-time post will receive equal consideration. If such a candidate is appointed the job content will be modified as appropriate in consultation with consultant colleagues and local management.

Main duties of the job

Ensure routine and emergency patients are seen and managed expeditiously. Daily ward rounds and punctuality are necessary. Keeping good records on ward rounds are required. These must be dated and initialled together with any other related administrative duties including discharge and clinic letters. Duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant(s), in consultation where possible with other colleagues. Agree to read and follow any protocols laid down either in writing or verbally by the Department of GI/ General Surgery/Trust. In case of any difficulties ensure that advice is sought from a senior colleague/ consultant. Be involved in teaching junior doctors/medical students and attending and presenting at clinical meetings/journal clubs. Ensuring that patients management/care is handed over to the covering team in the evenings/ weekends.
