Salary: Research Associate/Fellow: £31,387 to £46,485 (minimum £34866 with relevant PhD). Senior Research Fellow: £45,163 to £56,921 per annum (pro-rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.

We are looking for an experienced researcher with expertise in the generation and analysis of quantitative education data to work in the Observatory for Mathematical Education; a collaboration between the School of Education and the School of Mathematical Sciences. The Observatory will generate state-of-the-art, evidence-driven, and policy-relevant research to improve mathematical education, learner outcomes and longer-term benefits for individuals and society.  Its remit stretches through primary and secondary maths education, to undergraduate study and postgraduate research in the mathematical sciences. 

The Observatory will explore how learner pathways and outcomes are impacted by a range of societal, personal, and educational factors, through the generation and analysis of a groundbreaking primary dataset comprising multiple linked surveys as part of the Observatory’s longitudinal cohort studies, and through the analysis of administrative datasets (e.g. the National Pupil Database).  It will also undertake additional evaluation and intervention projects in mathematics education.

You will be able to carry out research of a high standard, and evidence how you will undertake original research of international excellence. It will be key that you prepare your work for publication in leading journals and contribute to its distribution at national and international meetings.   

This position is a permanent with underlying funding until 17th October 2028. With Possible extension subject to funding.  This position is available from 1st January 2025 [or as soon as possible thereafter]. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours) ; however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 21.75 hours per week). Please specify in your application if you wish to work part time and the number of preferred hours. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements with you, though secure data will need to be accessed via the Observatory’s Data Lab on Jubilee Campus, University of Nottingham. Job share arrangements may be considered.
