EngD Studentship: Quantum Systems Engineering

Loughborough, United Kingdom Loughborough University Full time
Project details

The UK has invested significant funding to transition quantum theories into quantum products to create a quantum-enabled economy within the next 10 years, to revolutionise healthcare, energy, transport, and many other sectors.

NPL, the UK’s national metrology institute, is developing a fully functioning, thoroughly characterised, local area quantum network (QLAN) linking heterogeneous nodes across its site. It will make this testbed available to users for testing hardware and applications. NPL will lead on the testing and security evaluation of the testbed and collaborate widely on the technology development.

Funded by the National Physical Laboratory, this projects will aim to develop novel approaches, methods and tools to facilitate the design of this network as it evolves and verification of its performance, or specific aspects of it, contributing to the overall assurance of the quantum network.

The projects are suitable for students who have either an engineering or a physics background. The programme includes formal teaching in model-based systems engineering from Loughborough Systems Engineering experts and industrial leaders. The project will include the opportunity for collaboration on solving complex systems problems.

By completing the EngDoc programme, you will become a future thought leader in a rapidly growing area of technology.

The School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering has seen 100% of its research impact rated as 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' (REF, 2021).

Supervisors

Primary Supervisor: Prof Michael Henshaw (Doctoral Centre Lead)

Tuition fees cover the cost of your teaching, assessment and operating University facilities such as the library, IT equipment and other support services. University fees and charges can be paid in advance and there are several methods of payment, including online payments and payment by instalment. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.

The EngDoc studentship which is provided by NPL is for 4 years and provides a tax-free stipend of £21,237 per annum including a £2k enhancement for the duration of the studentship plus university tuition fees at the UK rate.

How to apply

Applications should be made online. Under programme name, select ‘Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering/Electronic, Electrical & Systems Engineering’ and quote the advert reference number FP-MH-2024-3 in your application.

To avoid delays in processing your application, please ensure that you submit your CV and the minimum supporting documents.

The following selection criteria will be used by academic schools to help them make a decision on your application.

MBSE offers a framework for considering all aspects of a requirement, and its solution, in a logically integrated way that can persist and evolve through the whole lifecycle of a solution or product. As such, there is huge potential for effectively and efficiently tackling the real-life complexities of problems. However, this potential is most often not...

Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is an essential capability for development of modern systems and its use is being mandated on some major projects of national significance. Furthermore, large complex projects require coherence across the supply chain in both technical and business processes; the MBSE approach has at its heart a model that is regarded...

Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is becoming the accepted approach on many projects in complex systems and in some areas the approach is mandated for projects. As such, it is essential that the projects are structured and managed in such a way that the full benefits of MBSE are realisable. On the other hand, while practising MBSE expert judgement has...
