Full Time, Permanent role

Rarely does an opportunity to make your mark and further your career come up like this in a very unique environment.

About us

G4S Care & Rehabilitation Services (CaRS) successfully manages four prisons, one secure training centre and a number of community contracts across England and Wales. The philosophy of our business is to rehabilitate young people and equip them with the skills needed to resettle back into society.  Our aim is to create an environment in which our employees and our young people feel safe and supported.

About the role

HMP & YOI Parc is a fast paced complex and challenging environment.

You will be managing a team of direct reports responsible for delivering the day to day operation of the Young Persons Unit working with a multi-disciplinary team.

You will manage all aspects of the Young Persons Unit, ensuring consistent cost effective service delivery in accordance with contractual and Company requirements and legislation.

In addition, as part of the YOI, the role will require you to promote a child centred approach which prioritises both the safeguarding of the children’s welfare and wellbeing, as well as ensuring that a stable and secure environment is provided for all the children and employees within the unit.

Some of the key responsibilities for this role are:

  • Manage the day to day operation of the YPU, providing direction to operational managers, so that service delivery and resource utilisation are optimised.
  • Assist in ensuring that the fabric and security systems of the building are maintained and developed to deliver safety, security and control of the YPU.
  • Liaise with the Youth Custody Service (YCS) to resolve contractual issues whilst practising continuous improvement to ensure the interests of the contract and company are protected.
  • Manage the development and effective implementation of operational policies and procedures to ensure compliance with the contract and relevant standards.
  • Monitor contract performance within the YPU ensuring issues are addressed proactively and a cost effective contractually compliant service is delivered.
  • Implement and monitor an effective ACCT and Peaceful Community systems to minimise suicides and self-harm within the YPU.
  • Act as Silver Commander as required ensuring the safety/security of staff and children is maintained and the risk of escalation is minimised.
  • Adjudicate children in line with prison service standards to ensure hearings are conducted fairly, justly and impartially
  • Coach and support staff to maximise their performance and ensure values, ethical standards, equality and diversity policies and procedures and contractual requirements are met.
  • Lead on the management of sickness absence across the YPU ensuring that Senior Managers and their direct reports are responsible on driving their sickness down within their functions.
  • Lead on all inspections of the YPU including the HMIP inspection and OSAG inspection

You will need to be able to promote an environment that is clean, decent and respectful to the young people in our care, ensuring that their safety and wellbeing is at the heart of all that we do.

You will also need to be highly organised, always being prepared for regular external audits and inspections whilst having the ability to drive and deliver innovation to improve the unit.

The Ideal Candidate:

About you

Leading by example, we are looking for a highly motivated and determined senior manager, with the ability to be resilient, confident with a tenacious can-do attitude, have the ability to embrace complexity and be a part of a busy and fast paced senior management team.

As the Head of the Young Persons Unit, it is essential that you have substantial current experience of working within a custodial environment; and have the ability to thrive in a dynamic and challenging setting.  You will also need experience in working with children and young people and to have a passion for understanding and advocating for their needs.

The successful candidate will need to evidence operational excellence within a secure environment preferably dealing with children, an understanding of contractual compliance, an in depth working knowledge of prison operations and legislative requirements, and success in leading a team.

The role requires working with a wide range of stakeholders in a high profile environment and it is key that you are flexible and adaptable to deal with ever-changing scenarios that working in Youth Custody provides.

As an experienced senior manager, it is essential that you are a dynamic and engaging individual who shares our ethics and values to deliver a first class service for children in our care, employees and the customer.

The successful candidate needs to be innovative, passionate and to share the Director's vision of making HMP & YOI Parc a centre of excellence and embed best practice.  A senior manager who develops transparent and collaborative ways of working to engender openness, trust and inclusion.

This is an opportunity to make a real difference and lead a high performing team. You will motivate, inspire and lead your team to success, despite the significant challenges of managing a complex environment.

Equality and Diversity is an important part of G4S Care and Rehabilitation Services. We actively encourage applications from all backgrounds and are a fully inclusive employer who aims to support all employees to be their true selves. We are happy to discuss any reasonable adjustments for either the role or during the recruitment process.

Please note that these vacancies are subject to a 5 year checkable history and the strict vetting standards set by G4S, and His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service and are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.

You must be eligible to work in the UK. You will also need to provide full details of your employment and education history for the last 5 years as part of the security screening process for this role.
