Postdoctoral Research Associate in Trafficking within the Secretory Pathway

Oxford, United Kingdom University of Oxford Full time

About the role

We are seeking to appoint two talented structural biologists/protein biochemists (CryoEM and/or cellular imaging) to join the Newstead Lab to drive our research in understanding the molecular mechanisms underpinning cellular trafficking within the secretory pathway. The lab undertakes a multidisciplinary approach spanning structural biology, biochemistry and cell biology to address our research questions from molecular mechanism to cellular phenotype. The successful candidate will perform experiments encompassing membrane protein purifications for structure-function studies, combined with biophysical and biochemical characterisation and cellular imaging using state-of-the-art tools and resources. These posts provide an outstanding training opportunity for candidates with a passion for tackling complex scientific problems with curiosity and creativity. The lab provides an inclusive environment to empower lab members to express themselves, propose novel ideas and give actionable feedback. In addition, lab members will be provided with guidance and tools to maximise their potential and advance in both their professional and personal development.

These full-time fixed-term posts are funded by the Wellcome Trust up to 31st March 2025 in the first instance.

The actual starting salary offered will be based on qualifications and relevant skills acquired and will also be determined by the funding available.

About you

You will hold a PhD/DPhil or be near completion of a PhD/DPhil in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology or a related discipline, and you will have evidence of working with eukaryotic recombinant protein expression systems and purification techniques for structural and biophysical studies.  Experience in working with challenging protein systems for structural and biochemical characterisation is essential, together with experience in X-ray crystallography and single particle cryo-EM sample preparation and the use of relevant software related to these processes.  You will have a willingness to tackle challenging projects with enthusiasm and have the ability to design and implement experiments, demonstrating initiative in developing, improving, and troubleshooting experimental methods.  Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work independently and within a team are essential, as are having excellent oral and written communication skills.

Application Process

You will be required to upload a supporting statement setting out how you meet the selection criteria, curriculum vitae and the names and contact details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12 noon on Monday, July 1st, 2024, can be considered. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed as soon as possible thereafter.
