Child Pedestrian Skills Instructor in Wrexham

Job Purpose

To help achieve national and local objectives in reducing child pedestrian casualties, collisions and near misses, and empowering active travel by delivering a practical child pedestrian training scheme for 5-7year olds in primary schools. 

Wrexham CBC’s Child Pedestrian Training Scheme will be based on the Kerbcraft skills but will be adapted where necessary to maximise the training opportunities. The key training elements are prescribed but the course content will be adapted to suit the school’s local environment. 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Delivery of Child Pedestrian Training sessions in accordance with the relevant guidance. 

Risk assessing throughout the sessions and taking responsibility for the safety of pupils, any volunteers and colleagues.

To select a suitable site for carrying out Pedestrian skills training contacting the Road Safety Team to check selection and risk assess the site.

To contact Schools within the County Borough Council area in order to formulate an active training list of dates and forward them to the Road Safety Team

To prepare for the session by checking the risk assessments provided by Road Safety colleagues at Wrexham County Borough Council and liaising with the school and relevant colleagues about any concerns.

To monitor session participation to feed back to the Road Safety team and evaluate the success of the sessions in line with the evaluation plan.

Qualifications

Suitable experience in working with young children

Experience of working in a school setting

Qualification in child development or similar

Specialist Knowledge

Basic understanding of Road Safety 

Experience in Road Safety work

Experience in assessing risks

Background and understanding of safeguarding procedures

Practical and Intellectual Skills

Ability to communicate in Welsh

Experience of delivering training

Personal Attributes

Approachable

Calm and able to reassure young children

Personal Circumstances

Ability to travel within an agreed area to deliver at schools identified
