This role will provide essential support to our operational teams responding to potential pollution events. You will support the business in understanding the impact of discharges on the environment by making observations, sampling and taking photographs. Your assessment will direct mitigation activity onsite to ensure the containment of pollution and restoration of the natural environment.

The vital information you collect will be shared with our regulator to enable the accurate recording of pollution data in line with our performance commitments and the Environmental Performance Assessment. You will become a trusted contact at Anglian Water for our key environmental stakeholders.

When you are not responding to events, you will ensure that mitigation equipment remains fully stocked and available for use. You may also be called upon to collect valuable baseline data to inform us of the natural conditions of the waterbodies in our region. You will also support activities across the business that contribute to pollution reduction such as complex investigation work and validation of spill alarms.

You will develop integral local knowledge of catchments which will support pollution response but may be called upon to support other areas in peak workload scenarios. There is an expectation that you will be available for standby to ensure we maintain our excellent pollution response out of core hours.

You will be seen as an advocate for the environment, and you will actively model and promote a zero pollutions mindset.

Responsibilities:

  • Environmental impact assessments which include sampling for various water quality parameters, photographs and observations

  • Conduct proactive environmental monitoring and assessments to understand baseline conditions of watercourses

  • Deploy pollution mitigation equipment such as booms, sandbags and over pumping where appropriate

  • Liaise with regulators on site e.g. providing an overview of the event or receiving a formal sample

  • Maintain the quality, quantity and safety standards of pollution response equipment

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders for environmental initiatives.

  • Support the wider business with pollution reduction activities such as our complex investigations function through network survey and knowledge

  • Ensure that our pollution response is maintained out of hours by contributing to standby

  • Strict Adherence to Health and Safety procedures

Your skills, qualifications and experience:

  • Full UK driving license.

  • Experience in environmental field or water industry (desirable).

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

  • Passion for sustainability and environmental practices.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Adaptability and proactive mindset.
