The opportunity
Due to project increases, our leading public sector client is currently seeking a temporary Maintenance Engineer, with structures experience who can inspect structures and write up reports, BCI forms, 277 forms and can organise/ access arrangements. This may require taking the role of Principal Contractor under CDM regs.

The role
As a Structures Maintenance Engineer, your role will involve general and principal inspections of structures and associated report writing. It will be based in mid Wales out of their Llandrindod Wells office and would be hybrid working with 2 days attendance in the office per week.
The position is for a structures inspector that will inspect structures in Mid Wales and will need to attend their Llandrindod Wells office 2 days per week.

To assist the Senior Structures Maintenance Engineer in managing the routine highway structures maintenance programme for approximately 1100 structures. Develop specialist expertise to ensure efficiency of maintenance operations is maximised. Take a leading role and be innovative in overall inspection and maintenance service delivery within the Bridge Management Unit.

This role will be based in Llandrindod Wells, Wales
Hybrid working 2 days from the office and 3 days from home/ inspecting bridge structures out onsite.
40 hours per week
£28.09 per hour + 33 paid holidays per annum (negotiable) inside IR35 due to being public sector.
Duration 12 months.

Health and safety and environmental legislation knowledge of

  • 1. current best practice in inspection and maintenance issues
  • 2. method of procurement for external contractors and consultants necessary to meet service delivery requirements
  • 3. technical standards and developments (including computer systems currently in use), and professional and statutory responsibilities (including e.g. those under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act, 1974, Wildlife & Countryside Act 1982, Habitat Regulations 1994 and appropriate Regulations e.g. CDM regulations) and of their application relevant to the work and functions being carried out.

Your duties and responsibilities will be

  • To assist in the preparation of cost estimates, carry out risk assessments, plan inspection staff requirements, produce programmes and expenditure forecasts. Monitor actual progress against forecasts and take necessary remedial action.
  • To manage flexible project teams, within the Unit and the Service as a whole, and provide leadership to junior team members.
  • To assist in the financial control of service delivery and give financial feedback to the Senior Structures Maintenance Engineer and Principal Bridge Manager on delivery issues at regular intervals.
  • To assist the Senior Structures Maintenance Engineer in managing the role of project sponsor in commissioning and management of consultants and contractors.
  • To assist in the resolution of contractual matters with organisations such as contractors & consultants
  • To develop a personal expertise and be active in the implementation of project management techniques and systems (eg PRINCE2, NMWTRA & WG systems) that will ensure that the Unit delivers value for money.
  • To undertake highway structures inspections and manage structure routine maintenance work.
  • Assist in the monitoring the agency strategic objectives to ensure optimum performance of the unit and that key targets are achieved
  • To act as the supervisor for routine maintenance functions when required.
  • To undertake the duties assigned to the company under CDM regulations.
  • The supervision of financial, administrative and technical control of highway structure maintenance activities.
  • To develop an expertise in inspection and maintenance related computer systems and software e.g.wg iris and assist the senior structures maintenance engineer on these matters within the unit to optimise performance of the bridge management unit.
  • To liaise with other organisations including wg, statutory undertakers, other authorities, and individuals concerning all aspects of the service delivery.
  • To supervise and guide the work and development of subordinate staff.
  • To report to, and receive instructions from senior staff other relevant administrative and professional duties commensurate with the seniority of the post.
  • This is an illustrative list only. The post holder is expected to have a role in the process of managing and monitoring performance in accordance with the requirement of the post and to carry out other duties relevant to the nature and grade of the post in accordance with the head of service/manager or strategic director's.

You will have the following qualifications and experience

  • You will need to be BICS qualified or registered with BICS and working towards BICS qualification. This is a requirement of Welsh Government.
