New Malden, United Kingdom Blossom House School Full time

In order to meet the needs of students, we are expanding our Education for Life curriculum provision for students for whom this would be more appropriate. These students will be following the Equals curriculum, with a strong emphasis on students practising real-life skills in real contexts such as learning about money by buying something in a shop or learning about literacy by reading menus and road signs. Our overall goals for these students are to develop their literacy and numeracy skills alongside providing a broad and diverse curriculum, to ensure they can use and apply these skills in everyday life, and to prepare them for future employment and independent living.

At Blossom House, close multi-disciplinary team work, is one of our core values. We are very proud of our dynamic team of specialist teachers, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, teaching assistants and art therapists who work very closely together to ensure our students experience a meaningful, holistic timetable of activities to optimise their independence and emotional wellbeing.

What the role involves:

This is an exciting opportunity, which is currently based in our fabulous Wimbledon School, to be part of the school’s continued growth.

This role involves planning, teaching and delivering an adapted and pertinent functional curriculum, within a maximum class size of 6 pupils, working alongside an experienced MDT. The provision will largely follow the guidelines of the Equals Curriculum, so experience teaching functional or adapted curriculums would be beneficial. The new teacher will be creating schemes of work that equip these children with the education, functional needs and life skills that are essential to them to succeed in an ever-changing landscape.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Confidence, enthusiasm and a passion for learning.

• A relevant teaching qualification (QTS).

• Experience or enthusiasm for delivering functional/adapted curriculums and implementing learning in real life contexts.

• Experience with the Equals curriculum is favourable, but not essential.

• Experience and/or interest in working with students with moderate learning difficulties, language disorder, ASD and ADHD.

• Excellent English skills (clear written and spoken English) along with good reading, writing and numeracy skills.

• Experience of using symbolised communication systems (AAC) and/or Makaton to support language and learning in the classroom is favourable, but not essential.

• Experience of using technology to support literacy and numeracy skills.

• The ability to build good working relationships with children, school staff, parents and carers.

• The ability to promote positive behaviour in a nurturing environment is essential.

• The ability to manage a small group of children with social communication needs.

• A proven track record of working effectively in a team and demonstrating key skills such as adaptability and problem solving.

The role is a Permanent, Full-Time only role

Monday to Friday: (08:30am – 17:00pm)

Salary from: Dependent on experience

To Start: September 2024

Closing date: 30th April 2024

Early applications are encouraged

Please note this position is currently based at our Wimbledon School: 24 Gladstone Road, Wimbledon, SW19 1QT
