Associate Professorship in South Asian Studies
3 months ago
LOCATION: The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA) in association with Wolfson College, The University of Oxford
The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA) is committed to understanding cultural, economic, political and social questions through the study of world regions in local, global and comparative contexts. OSGA delivers world leading, multi-disciplinary programmes of teaching and research across Africa, China, Latin America, the Middle East, Japan, Russia and Eastern Europe, and South Asia.
About the Role:
Applications are invited for an Associate Professorship in South Asian Studies.
The post is offered on a full-time basis, available from 1 October 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is a joint appointment with Wolfson College, where the successful candidate will also be appointed to a Non-Tutorial Fellowship and membership of the Governing Body. Appointments to Associate Professorships are confirmed as permanent on successful completion of a review during the first five years.
The post-holder will be based in OSGA and will devote roughly 70% of their time to the Contemporary South Asian Studies Programme (CSASP) and 30% of their time to the Programme in Global and Area Studies (GAS).
The successful candidate will be expected to engage actively in research programmes of the School and to contribute through world-class publications to the School and University's international reputation for research excellence. Further responsibilities include teaching and supervising at graduate level, contributing fully to academic administration and examining as well as to the running and development of CSASP and the MPhil in Global and Area Studies, proportionate to the balance of the role. As a Governing Body Fellow of Wolfson College, the candidate will be expected to act as student adviser, to participate in the College Committee system and in its Governing Body meetings. Queries about the post should be addressed to Professor Paul Chaisty at paul.chaisty@politics.ox.ac.uk (Head of OSGA). All enquiries will be treated in strict confidence and will not form part of the selection decision.
About You:
The successful candidate will be a South Asia specialist who is undertaking outstanding contemporary social science research on one or more South Asian countries. We particularly welcome applications from candidates whose expertise is anchored in politics or political economy. While the country focus is open, we encourage candidates whose research focuses on Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, or Sri Lanka to apply.
Application process:
Information about the application process, as well as the full list of responsibilities and selection criteria can be obtained from the University of Oxford vacancy listing and job description (Vacancy ID: 174870), via the ‘Apply’ button above.
Circumstances such as caring responsibilities, ill health or disability may result in the quantity of a candidate's outputs being less than might otherwise be expected, therefore when considering candidate's research and publication record, career breaks will be taken into consideration.
Applications are particularly welcomed from women and Black and Minority Ethnic candidates, who are under-represented in academic posts in Oxford.
The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon (UK time) on Friday 4th October 2024.
Interviews are expected to be held in person in Oxford in late November or early December 2024.
