Southampton, United Kingdom University of Southampton Full time

Supervisory Team: Ioannis Zeimpekis

Project description:

Revolutionising the semiconductor industry with next generation 2D materials and devices.

Moore’s Law is currently being challenged with Nvidia CEO recently claiming it is over. The scaling of transistors cannot continue due to physical limitations of silicon posing a threat to the sustainable evolution of new technologies. 2D semiconductors offer the solution as they can be scaled to the molecular level and create in-memory computing components one of the key elements for neuromorphic computing the hardware that will support the next generation of artificial intelligence.

The project aims to create a revolutionary semiconductor platform using 2D materials to enable electronic, photonic and energy application while unlocking the ultimate limit in miniaturisation of semiconductors. You will benefit from state-of-the-art custom large area 2D equipment not available anywhere else and from one of the most advanced university cleanrooms in the UK.

If you like learning and applying novel concepts using the latest technology, you will certainly enjoy working with us. During your PhD studies you will have the opportunity to learn how to design, fabricate and characterise materials and devices for integrated electronics and photonics at the cutting edge of research. The project includes a development plan, with freedom to innovate in both material and device design domains. In addition to field specific skills, the University of Southampton training and mentoring programmes will provide training in report writing, project management, time management, presentation skills, and safety, all of which are applicable to future academic or industrial employability.

We are looking for a passionate candidate excited about the latest developments in technology. You will need a background in physics, chemistry, engineering, electronics, or a related discipline. A basic level of understanding semiconductor physics, photonics and material science are essential, and we will support you to expand in all these subjects. Experience with experimental work in either electronics, physics, optics or photonics, and computer modelling and/or programming languages are also desirable.

The University of Southampton is committed into sustaining an inclusive environment for all students and staff. The University holds an Athena SWAN Silver Award and works continuously to improve equality in the workplace and encourage a work-life balance. Our focus is on the development and progression of our students and researchers, and we achieve this through a friendly supportive environment.

Entry Requirements

A very good undergraduate degree (at least a UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent).

Closing date: 31st August 2024. Applications will be considered in the order that they are received, the position will be considered filled when a suitable candidate has been identified.

Funding: We offer a range of funding opportunities for both UK and international students, including Bursaries and Scholarships. For more information please visit PhD Scholarships | Doctoral College | University of Southampton. Funding will be awarded on a rolling basis, so apply early for the best opportunity to be considered.
