Estate Worker

Job Description

Netherwitton is a traditional, privately owned, family-run rural estate, located 8 miles west of Morpeth in Northumberland. We are now looking for an enthusiastic, reliable and adaptable individual to join the estate as a general estate worker with a bias towards conservation.

The role will encompass a range of responsibilities to assist with the general running of the estate. The Estate extends to over 5,000 acres of primarily let farmland and in hand woodlands with residential properties and is centred on Netherwitton Hall. The estate is in the process of creating holiday lets with focus on the environment and protection of red squirrels.

The role is hands-on and will require independent work, problem solving and the ability to work well directly with the employer and other employees. Everyday tasks will include culling grey squirrels and nurturing red squirrel as well as monitoring deer activity as part of our Woodland Improvement Scheme, forestry work (clearing fallen trees, planting trees), maintenance and improvement of estate properties. Other work may include fencing repairs, ditching and drainage, response to emergency repairs. The applicant should be computer literate in creating and running spreadsheets to record squirrel and deer activity.

The majority of work will be outdoor. There is an opportunity to develop skills and potential for training for the right candidate.

The successful applicant will require the following:

Essential skills:

  • Chainsaw licence (LANTRA)
  • Full UK Driving licence
  • ATV certificate (LANTRA)
  • Computer skills

   
Desirable:

  • General property maintenance skills
  • Experience in the operation of farm machinery (e.g. tractors and associated equipment)
  • Spraying qualification (PA1, PA6)
  • Shooting experience
  • 1st Aid trained
  • Digger operator qualified (no more than 8 ton)

   
Standard hours will be 08:00 to 16:30 Monday to Thursday, 08:00 to 15:30 on Friday with a 30 minute lunch break. Overtime will be required in busier times or in the event of emergency repairs or other work.
