Mid and South East Cornwall Pont Fowey PL NQ, United Kingdom National Trust Full time

Location: Mid and South East Cornwall, Pont, Fowey, PL23 1NQ

Contract Type: Permanent

Reference/IRC: IRC154136

Closing Date: 21/07/2024

Salary: £26,832 per annum

The voice of our landscapes, conservation champions and lovers of all things outdoors, you’ll help to keep the British countryside and coast wonderful.

We have an exciting new project starting as one of our tenants retires. This will involve managing the farm for future generations to engage with the enormous history of the site going back to the stone age. And to create a spectacular site for wildlife, preserving the rare species that exist there already but also increasing diversity and abundance of our common species that are in decline through varied management and habitat creation.

As the Area Ranger you will manage a small team of Rangers and volunteers working like you throughout the portfolio: following the lead from the Property’s Business Plan you will build and manage an effective and flexible work programme for you and your team. You will support your fellow rangers in undertaking engagement and conservation work, contributing towards HLS (Higher Level Stewardship) targets.

You will play the key role in maintaining excellent standards of presentation and property maintenance, successfully achieving Conservation Performance Indicator targets. You will build and maintain strong professional relationships with colleagues, contractors, tenants and neighbouring land managers.

You’ll also be responsible for helping with excellent communication of our conservation work to a wide range of audiences, both new and existing, through events, guided walks and engagement with local communities. You will appreciate the need for our countryside sites to bring in income, so your business ideas will play an important part in the team’s success.

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Strong practical access and habitat management experience, delivering maintenance and presentation work to a high standard with an eye for detail
  • Great people skills, able to motivate, lead and inspire our rangers and volunteers
  • Excellent communication skills, able to build genuine long-term relationships with our teams, farm tenants, local communities and partner organisations
  • A good understanding of compliance and risk in the countryside with an ability to undertake compliance and risk management tasks to a high standard
  • Strong organisational skills, able to work independently, prioritising and managing your work and competing demands on your time
  • Written and verbal communication skills, able to produce marcomms / social media content to share our work
  • A full UK driving licence and competence with, and relevant qualifications for the use of machinery and equipment (e.g., chainsaw, tractor, trailer driving, brushcutter etc).
