Location: Aldermaston, West Berkshire. We are located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking.

Due to the classified nature of this role, it is anticipated that the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time working on site at AWE Aldermaston.

Package: GBP38,000 - GBP46,000 per annum (depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

AWE is currently recruiting for a Software Developer to provide Visualisation and Application support, through the development and deployment of software techniques and solutions on AWE's high performance computing (HPC) platforms.

What will you be required to do?

  • Design, code, test, deploy, and maintain Open Source, in-house and commercial software modules.

  • Develop and improve visualisation systems to deal with large scale complex data produced on High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms.

  • Produce online documentation.

  • Provide assistance to customers to resolve technical problems and queries.

  • Provide support for visualising experimental results.

  • Assist in production of publication-quality images and movies.

  • Interact with software and hardware suppliers, academia, and US National Laboratories.

  • Maintain an awareness of developments in visualisation, and software best practices.

Who Are We Looking For?

There is some flexibility on the level of experience required on entry to the role, but it is essential that the successful candidate has the following:

  • The ability to program in C++, or a similar high-level language like C, Fortran, or Java

  • A basic understanding of computer architectures

  • Ability to capture software requirements and produce appropriate implementations

  • Clear and concise communication: both oral and written

  • Ability to integrate and work well in a team

  • A degree or equivalent experience in computer science, physics, mathematics or other numerate discipline

In addition, any of the following would be an advantage:

  • Experience of software testing, continuous integration, or deployment

  • Knowledge of visualisation, computer graphics or data science techniques

  • Familiarity with Python, or similar scripting languages

  • Experience of debuggers and performance analysis tools

  • An understanding of object oriented programming

  • Familiarity with VisIt, ParaView, EnSight, VTK or similar visualisation packages

  • Exposure to scientific computing

  • Experience deploying or using commercial packages in an HPC environment

  • Experience working with open source software

  • Experience working in Linux/Unix environment
