We have an exciting opportunity to join the Ophthalmology Team at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust as a fellow in our Cornea team. LTHT Eye Department is the largest provider of specialist hospital Ophthalmology Services in the Yorkshire Region.

Applications are welcomed for this post, which could be held as either full time or part time. This position would suit a senior higher surgical trainee or post-CCT doctor who has to demonstrable interest in Anterior Segment Ophthalmology. Competence in cataract surgery is desirable but not essential.

The post is available from the beginning of October 2024 and will be for a minimum of 6 months. There is a possibility of a sooner start date.

Candidates must be fully registered with the General Medical Council and hold a license to practice at the time of appointment

Main duties of the job

To deliver a wide range of Ophthalmology care and sub speciality care for cases, at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

Out-patient clinics

Supervision of patients

Contribute to Specialist Multi-disciplinary team meetings

Ensure provision of a high standard of care to patients in operating theatre, inpatients, day cases and outpatients for both acute and elective conditions

Referrals to other specialists, departments and hospitals are timely and appropriate

To link with Consultant colleagues in other relevant site specialist teams within the Trust

To contribute to research, teaching and new developments within the Ophthalmology department. The post holder will be encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical research programs on going in the department.

In addition to the clinical skills, the post holder will be actively involved in research and publication.

The post holder will also be expected to develop a deeper understanding of management issues within Teaching Hospital Departments and the wider Trust.

About us

The Eye Department is based at St James University Hospital, Leeds. There are 29 consultants in the wider Ophthalmology Department. The team also trains Ophthalmic specialist trainees from the region. We have recently moved into a new outpatient department which has provided us which much more space for patients and clinicians. The Ophthalmology department provides a comprehensive range of secondary and tertiary eye (ophthalmic) services for adults and children in Leeds and a tertiary eye service for other areas of Yorkshire and beyond.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will be carefully supported throughout the first month of the tenure but will be expected to develop more autonomous working patterns as experience grows. The post-holder will be working at the level of an ST5 or above.

The post holder will be encouraged to contribute to the active research portfolio of the department. Previous post-holders will have presented at national and international ophthalmology meetings.

Clinical, Academic, and Personal Skills
Essential

Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives

Experience
Essential

Completed at least one 6 month block of cornea ophthalmology within a higher surgical training scheme after full GMC registration

Desirable

Completed a 6 month block of Corneal ophthalmology training

Qualifications

FRCOphth or equivalent qualification

Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at the time of appointment. Eligibility to work in the UK
