We are inviting applications to fill our Clinical fellow vacancy at The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the Oral and maxillofacial Department. This post is aimed at individuals who wish to extend their experience of maxillofacial surgery, tailored job plans are available for those interested in research or teaching.

This post will last for 12 months and will commence September 2024. Candidates must be eligible for registration with the General dental Council and hold a license to practice.

Main duties of the job

Duties will include:

Management of inpatients including post op and acute admissions

Operating theatre and outpatients

Discharge letters

Discussions with relatives

Initiation/change of treatment

Participation in the DCT oncall rota (pro rata)

Job Title: Clinical Fellow

INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

This job is busy and exciting, and you will see a large volume of trauma, oncology, adult and paediatric facial deformity, salivary gland, cleft lip/palate and craniofacial surgery.

All in-patient care and operating is undertaken at the Leeds General Infirmary which is directly attached to the LDI. Our hospital is a specialist regional centre for cleft lip and palate, undertakes Craniofacial and Osseodistraction surgery and is the regional Major Trauma Centre (MTC), providing exciting experience in the management of the multiply injured patient. Our ward (23) is located on G floor in the Jubilee wing and is a dedicated Maxillofacial/ENT/Neurosurgery ward.

The Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery out-patient department is based at the Leeds Dental Institute (LDI). Our unit and department has excellent facilities of multiple consulting rooms, dedicated minor surgical suites and a day surgery general anaesthetic theatre, where a large volume of LA, sedation and GA work takes place.

MEDICAL STAFF IN THE DEPARTMENT

The Oral and Maxillofacial surgery department is dynamic, friendly and energetic, and comprises 9 Consultants, 4 Specialty Registrars, and 5 Specialty Dental Surgeons. You will be part of a close knit team of 8 DCTs and 2 LDFTs. We have a large and dedicated nursing staff together with excellent secretarial support. Our Unit has a strong team ethos and our aim is to deliver exceptional care for our patients, and provide quality in our teaching and training for our junior staff. We have close links with both the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Leeds.

Maxillofacial Consultants - All consultants have a wide scope of practice, although their subspecialty interests are noted below:

DUTIES OF THE POST

Our Accident and Emergency department provides a range of acute conditions which you cover out of hours. The job is a full shift rota of 1 in 8 out of hours. There is a wealth of oral and minor oral surgery operating that you will be exposed to at the Dental Institute, so this job would appeal to anyone who wants to develop and further their experience in all aspects of dental, oral and maxillofacial surgery.

There is a weekly teaching programme, regular audit and regional study days, and great opportunities to develop core professional competencies. We encourage research and study for postgraduate examinations. We also undertake dedicated oral surgery teaching days for our core trainees, where they receive one to one teaching to develop their oral surgical skills.

The post is recognised by the Royal Colleges under MFDS and MRCS regulations.

The post holder is required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold a licence to practice.

Standards of Conduct and Behaviour

You are required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Council in Good Medical Practice. This includes protecting patients when you believe that a doctors or other colleagues conduct, performance or health is a threat to them. If, after establishing the facts, it is necessary, you must follow the Trusts procedures in this matter and inform your Clinical Director or Medical Director in the first instance.

Leave Arrangements

All leave should be applied for in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy, normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptional circumstances.

The jobholder must take responsibility in agreement with his/her line manager for his/her own personal development by ensuring that Continuous Professional Development remains a priority. The jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role.
