Stipendiary Lectureship in Clinical Surgery

Merton College proposes to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Clinical Surgery (Bedside Teaching) to teach 4th, 5th and 6th year Clinical students for an average of 2 hours per week in full term. The appointment will be from 1 October 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

This is a permanent appointment for a clinically qualified and actively practicing surgeon in an Oxford hospital, who is able to conduct bedside teaching.  The post could be offered for a shorter duration for an appropriately qualified individual with surgical experience and who is able to conduct surgical bedside teaching in an Oxford hospital (e.g. a clinician on a relevant fixed-term surgical training programme).

  The main duties of the post will be: 

  • To have organisational responsibility for bedside teaching relating to surgery.
  • To plan and deliver an average of 2 hours of bedside teaching per week in full term to support learning for Final Examinations in 6th year BM BCh.
  • To ensure that students receive timely feedback on their performance.
  • To undertake academic administration and provide study skills and examination preparation support for students studying Clinical Medicine.
  • To undertake pastoral responsibilities and, if requested, to act as College Advisor to a number of postgraduates in the Medical Sciences.

The successful candidate will be clinically qualified and actively practicing in an Oxford hospital as a surgeon, and willing and able to successfully undertake bedside teaching for Clinical Medical students.
