Job Introduction

The Operations team at BBC Wales are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the team as an Operational Production Engineer who will be responsible for leading technical and craft delivery for multi and emerging platform outside broadcasts (OBs) nationally and internationally, working both independently and with larger technical teams from across the BBC and other organisations/broadcasters.

Main Responsibilities

As an Operational Production Engineer, you will hold the following responsibilities:

  • Manage multi-skilled field technical operations and staff to a high standard, often working autonomously or in small teams, principally for news outlets, but on occasion for other genres of program-making, to facilitate production and transmission of live and recorded content, both at home and abroad, for transmission on all platforms.
  • Lead the technical planning and delivery for news coverage and events, against a background of changing editorial priorities and program requirements.
  • Ensure coverage is effective and efficient within financial, staffing and logistical constraints.
  • Responsible for on-site live transmission issue resolution, taking into account scheduling, safety, editorial priorities and resource management. Lead on the provision of advice to production teams regarding mitigations and suitable alternatives.
  • Responsible for the first line maintenance of audio, video and communications equipment in the field to ensure a high level of availability and reliability; working in partnership with technical support areas as required.
  • Work closely with the wider Operations team and Technology teams to devise end to end technical solutions for events and OBs, maximising the available skills and resource.
  • Communicate complex technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences including on-air talent.
  • Be responsible for creating a positive working environment for colleagues from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences.
  • Work in a flexible and dynamic way to ensure all business needs are met with competence and enthusiasm.
  • Drive BBC or hire vehicles, up to and including C1 class (with appropriate training), ensuring compliance with regulation and BBC policies.
  • To take on or contribute to technical operational project work.
  • Responsible for the development, training and appraisal of team members where required.
  • Responsible for devising safe and operationally viable solutions- from technology to staffing.
  • In small teams, carry the responsibility for successful transmission. As part of a larger team, carry the role of Subject Matter Expert in the specialist area.
  • Work alongside a number of Operational, Production and Editorial roles in order to deliver seamless and high quality content for our audiences
  • The working environment will vary and may include extreme conditions on location, abroad and occasionally required to work in difficult conditions.


Are you the right candidate?

Essential:

  • Degree or Level 5 BTEC / NVQ or equivalent in a relevant discipline (e.g. broadcast Engineering degree apprentice scheme), or the relevant experience.
  • Broad technical knowledge, including understanding of varied and complex systems.
  • Experience of guiding colleagues within multi-platforms, and complex environments.
  • Self-sufficient and proactive in resolving technical issues and operational problems.
  • Extensive knowledge of baseband and digital video and audio.
  • Extensive knowledge of broadcast systems inclusive of satellite operations.
  • Good knowledge of IT Systems as relating to broadcast field operations, to include IP networks and hardware including switches, routers and firewalls.
  • A high level of editorial awareness and a demonstrable appreciation of BBC News output.
  • Appreciation of the creative and artistic constraints associated with broadcast media.
  • Critical approach to audio and picture quality and have sufficient colour vision and hearing.
  • Knowledge of electrical and electronic equipment used in Radio and TV production and the ability to find and rectify faults within studio and OB facilities.
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety in the Workplace and experience in studio and OB safe working practices.
  • Basic office IT skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Self-starting and results focussed, with the ability to inspire, encourage and empower colleagues to focus on achieving goals.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and an appreciation of customer relations.
  • The ability to remain calm under pressure.


Desirable:

  • Knowledge of IP based signal routing, processing and distribution.
  • Knowledge of file based media formats and handling in relation to content servers and graphics systems.
  • An operational knowledge of BBC media production systems and workflows including digital media standards.
  • Experience in rigging and cabling duties on location - this may involve some climbing and occasional work at heights.
  • Knowledge of the target audience, their needs and expectations.
  • Awareness of Conditions of Service, Working Time Directive and other workplace related legislation.
