The Glasgow Academy (TGA) is seeking to appoint an inspirational Head of Rowing, tolead, coach and develop our successful rowing programme from August 2024.

The School

The Person

The school's rowing club is in its 15th year and during that time we have produced threeWorld Champions and numerous internationalists. The program is highly regardedthroughout the country, regularly wins national titles, and competes on the higheststages, including the Schools’ Head of the River, National Schools’ Regatta, Henley RoyalRegatta and Women’s Henley Regatta. As well as this, we have pupils aiming for juniorinternational representation. You will be required to plan and coach at all levels, playing avital role in the delivery of the program objectives. You will be responsible for creating aprogram to achieve success at all local, domestic, and national levels, working across anexceptional team of coaching and teaching staff to ensure that input, involvement andengagement is of the utmost importance across all year groups. You will exhibit a provencoaching record and will be capable of delivering high quality coaching to pupils of allabilities. Ideally, you will have performed or coached to a high standard and will possessa British Rowing Coaching Award Level 2/3. Additionally, you will demonstrate an abilityto motivate both staff and pupils, utilising an outstanding set of communication andorganisational skills to help drive our rowing club forward to new levels of performanceand participation.

Main Responsibilities

  • Report directly to Director of Sport, Mrs Rhona Toft
  • Attend meetings at TGA as required.
  • To consult with fellow rowing coaches, Communications Manager, and the Director ofSport daily and work on building an effective and dynamic rowing environment forpupils.
  • To work with TGA S&C coach to implement land training and Strength & Conditioningsessions for all relevant pupils.
  • To assist coaches of younger age groups with technical framework & programming withthe aim of raising achievement and profile of all rowers.
  • Be confident organising equipment, carrying out minor repairs & equipment checks atthe Boathouse.
  • To take a proactive role in ensuring Rowing equipment is packed up at the end of eachsession, washed, checked for any damage then stored correctly.
  • Attend coaches' meetings throughout the season and review progress of the seasonregularly.
  • Keep records of programme, goals, pupils progress, testing, and reviews.
  • To assist the other coaches at regattas and head races, both rigging boats and boatingpupils for races.
  • Demonstrate competence and knowledge of the Scottish Rowing and British Rowingonline Entry system and incident reporting system.
  • To follow races and give relevant feedback to coaches and athletes as required.
  • To demonstrate excellent knowledge of rowing and sculling techniques.
  • To demonstrate knowledge of the principles of boat rigging.
  • To provide support to pupils and feedback on pupils' progress on a regular basis
  • Adhere to pupil code of conduct and behaviour standards in line with school policies.
  • Registers to be completed for each school session held in afternoons during schoolterms, either at the river or at school to ensure attendance is recorded at all sessions.
  • To assist in transport of boats to from regattas, involvement in towing trailers to andfrom regattas, and assist with their loading and unloading.
  • Lead coach to check trailer is loaded correctly.
  • Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety, monitoring and dealing withhazards by ensuring equipment is tidied away neatly.
  • Where necessary, to undergo on the job training and/or to attend INSET trainingoutside the school where appropriate to increase competence, proficiency, and safetyawareness.
  • Training and inset days held at TGA.
  • Be fully aware of and comply with relevant school policies and procedures, includingsafeguarding procedures, child protection policies at all times.
  • Supporting rowers through proactive communication and developing positiveprofessional relationships with parents.
  • Any other reasonable duties as required by the Director of Sport, the Rector and/orCOO in association with the above role.

Requirements for the job

  • UKCC level 2 coaching qualification.
  • Clean driving licence with ability to tow trailers.
  • Willingness to undertake relevant qualifications as deemed necessary to the role.
  • RYA power boat level 2 qualification.
  • A passion for creating excellence and the development of young pupils.
  • An ability to communicate with young people and adults at all levels.
  • Experience of management, promotion and compliance with safeguarding and childprotection policy and procedure.
  • Hold a current first aid qualification
  • Use of Microsoft office suite and other relevant software including SOCS.
  • Experience in running a rowing program from beginner to performance level.
  • Ability to work with other coaches.

Maintaining the boat-fleet and oars

  • Checking rigs and oars age appropriate
  • Attending ergo sessions
  • Attending S&C sessions
  • Attending GB Trials
  • Liaising with GB coaching team and Scottish Rowing performance group
  • Briefing athletes and parents on training sessions
  • Arranging entries for events in conjunction with the Communications Manager.
  • Managing crew selection in consultation with coaching team.
  • Mentoring and advising coaching team
  • Present and support other staff at pupils Hard Camp
  • Arranging and managing parent feedback
  • Maintaining test data
  • Preparing athlete presentations
  • Creating and distributing training programme
  • Managing the coaching team
  • Manning the safety boat
  • Taking video and video analysis.
  • Ensuring boathouse is kept in good order
  • Ensuring boathouse and steps are cleared
  • Putting safety/coaching launch on water
  • Opening clubhouse and gates
  • Refuelling safety/ coaching launch
  • Checking radio’s and other safety equipment
  • Arranging boat repairs
  • Arranging launch service
  • Moving boats and equipment to where required
  • Liaising with the Scottish Schools Rowing Council
  • Completing SR audits and returns
  • Checking and administrating rowing licences with Scottish and British Rowing
  • Analysing results and test data
  • Feedback performance to athletes and parents
  • Send results to the Rector and Director of Sport and any other relevant pupil success
  • Write a report for the School magazine
  • Write a report for sports prizegiving
  • Write reports to the school as required
  • Liaise with relevant school staff over programme logistics and requirements

The Appointment

The appointment is for August 2024 and is a full-time permanent post, which includesweekends (both Saturday and Sundays) and after-school hours as necessary.
