London, United Kingdom Wellcome Trust Full time

Founded in 1936, Wellcome is a politically and financially independent global charitable foundation, dedicated to supporting research to improve health, based in London, UK. It funds its work with the returns from an investment portfolio, which is managed in-house and currently stands at £37bn.

Wellcome’s vision is a healthier future for everyone, which it works to achieve through its mission of supporting science to solve the urgent health challenges facing everyone. Under the current strategy, Wellcome has identified three urgent health challenges facing everyone – Climate and Health, Infectious Diseases, and Mental Health – which need a different approach.

It is also deeply committed to funding and supporting open-ended, curiosity-driven research that generates new knowledge, insights and understanding about life, health and wellbeing.

Chief People Officer

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Chief People Officer will be a core member of the Extended Executive Group (EEG), who provide advice to the Executive Committee (ExCo). The primary purpose of the position will be to design and deliver Wellcome’s People framework to support Wellcome’s mission, and to lead on embedding Wellcome’s culture, values and behaviours across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Ensure that Wellcome attracts, retains, develops and drives performance in the talented people who we need to deliver our mission.
  2. Ensure that Wellcome’s organisational culture is optimised for delivering the mission, including improving engagement with and connection to the mission.
  3. Create a high-performing organisation; deliver leadership development initiatives and develop metrics that enable both fact-based decisions on strategic people matters and indicate the effectiveness of operational teams.
  4. Lead on change and transformation projects from a people perspective, harnessing the power of technology and AI to shape and enhance colleague experience and the way people work at Wellcome.
  5. Act as a sounding-board, coach and confidante on people matters for the ExCo and EEG.
  6. Work closely with the Executive Director Equity and EDI team to implement agreed EDI strategies across the whole organisation.
  7. Participate in, influence and inform Boards, committees, internal and external stakeholders as required.
  8. Ensure that processes are efficient, flexible and fit for purpose, while ensuring appropriate governance so that the People function’s activities are managed in line with Wellcome's compliance policies and risk appetite.
  9. Maintain effective operational support teams (People Ops, Health and Safety), with a drive and passion for customer service.

Wellcome has ambitious goals to improve equity, diversity, anti-racism and inclusion which it is determined to embed across its workforce, and in the delivery of its strategy. As such, applications are actively sought from the broadest range of society, including all under-represented groups.
