Role: Head of Software Engineering Location: London (Hybrid)
Managing a team of Chief Software Engineers to further develop our client's Software Engineering Capability across the UK. Must have previous hands on experience work on cutting-edge technology and capabilities whilst applying Software Engineering techniques in a very specific fashion on strategically important National Defence Programmes.

~ To provide functional management of all the engineers in this grouping, including regular 1-2-1s, development of career and training plans, conducting annual appraisals and managing staff performance.


~ Recruitment and management of the forward load for these teams, inputting into the appropriate business processes and allocating, training or recruiting engineering resource to ensure all project and bid activities are appropriately staffed with SQEP personnel and that the utilization for the team meets the budget target.


~ Ownership of the business processes related to Software including strong governance of software projects, adoption of best practice for software development etc. The Head of Software is expected to take an active role in the delivery of projects to keep them on track.


~ Work with IT to ensure the IT infrastructure and resources are sufficient for collaborative software development.


~ To provide inputs into Bids and Proposals, including planning the technical programme of work in conjunction with project management, providing input to technical proposals, software engineering estimates and work package descriptions.


~ To provide technical leadership into projects and product teams, such that the aims of the business to develop strong future product lines whilst maintaining On-Time Delivery (OTD) of contracted work. This could involve consulting/advising product and project teams, leading design reviews, inputting into project deliverables or providing independent review.


~ To develop specialist skills currently under-represented in the Software team e.g. software architecture and cyber-security.


~ To support the business in achieving export permissions for our products and projects, particularly in regard to security architectures and emerging Cyber-security standards. Technical knowledge and experience of Software engineering practices is essential, including lifecycle.
Technically competent in the tools, (Java, C++, Python, Rhapsody, Azure DevOps/Jira, GIT etc.)
Experience withing delivering the Business' strategic plans for long term growth.
Deliver effective Software Engineering input into bids, proposals and projects, often on a tight schedule, maintaining high OTD standards.
Experience as a Department head or Senior Management
