Purpose of the Role: The Design Engineer (LV Capability) will be responsible for developing and delivering low voltage (LV) electrical designs in support of projects undertaken with National Gas and National Grid. This includes the design, coordination, and technical assurance of LV systems associated with gas transmission, electricity transmission, and infrastructure upgrade projects. The role requires a strong understanding of electrical engineering principles, utility network standards, and compliance with relevant codes and specifications to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective design solutions. Key Responsibilities: Develop detailed LV electrical designs , including single line diagrams, cable sizing, protection and control schematics, earthing, and load assessments. Support multi-disciplinary design teams across gas and grid projects, ensuring LV systems integrate seamlessly with overall project design. Prepare and review design documentation , drawings, and technical specifications in line with National Gas and National Grid standards. Conduct design risk assessments , ensuring compliance with CDM regulations and company HSE requirements. Interface with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to clarify technical requirements and ensure design intent is met. Support design reviews , HAZOPs, and constructability reviews throughout the project lifecycle. Provide technical input during installation, commissioning, and handover stages. Ensure all design work complies with BS7671 , ENA standards , NGT specifications , and relevant industry regulations. Manage and maintain design documentation to support quality assurance and audit requirements . Support the development of standard design templates , design tools, and best practices for LV systems. Qualifications & Experience: Essential: Degree or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or related discipline. Proven experience in LV electrical design for utilities, transmission, or infrastructure projects. Working knowledge of BS7671 IET Wiring Regulations , ENA TS , and National Grid Technical Specifications (e.g., NGTS 2.11, 3.1.6). Experience producing electrical schematics, layouts, cable routing, and earthing designs using CAD and design software. Understanding of network protection, SCADA, and control systems at LV level. Experience working on National Gas or National Grid frameworks (directly or via Tier 1 contractor). Strong knowledge of health, safety, and environmental standards relevant to electrical design and construction. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and technical presentations. Desirable: Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards professional registration with the IET . Experience with HV/LV interface design and substation auxiliary systems . Familiarity with Amtech, AutoCAD Electrical, or Revit . Knowledge of gas compressor station or substation design environments . Experience in design assurance or technical governance for utility projects.
