The R& D Theme Lead Research Nurse is an experienced independent specialist practitioner working in partnership with the R& D theme clinical director to lead the delivery and growth of clinical research within Oncology and across the wider R and D structure. The post holder will be responsible for providing clinical and professional leadership and line management to research staff within the oncology theme.

Main duties of the job

The post holder's responsibilities include the day-to-day management of the research delivery teams providing support, education and professional development of junior research staff ensuring that support is provided to the relevant consultants and their teams within the academic department.

Job responsibilities

T he R& D Theme Lead Research Nurse is an experienced independent specialist practitioner working in partnership with the R& D theme clinical director to lead the delivery and growth of clinical research within the Theme and across the wider R and D structure. The post holder will be responsible for providing clinical and professional leadership and line management to research staff within the theme.

The post holder will have joint responsibility with the R& D theme clinical director for overseeing the management and delivery of research studies in partnership with key stakeholders to ensure that all studies are delivered to high research and clinical governance standards.

The post holders responsibilities include the day-to-day management of the research delivery teams providing support, education and professional development of junior research staff ensuring that support is provided to the relevant consultants and their teams within the academic department.

The Lead Research Nurse will support the Head of Research Nursing to promote and oversee the development of nursing research within Research and Development. This will include collaboration with other senior nurses and research managers to develop and implement a nursing and AHP research strategy.

The post holder will also work with the R& D theme portfolio manager on the co-ordination and management of a clinical research portfolio comprising in-house, national and international phase I, II and III clinical trials. The post holder will collaborate with key personnel to ensure the continued care and support for patients involved in clinical trials.

The post holder will ensure co-ordination and promotion of education of ward staff and multi-disciplinary team members in other relevant areas involved in clinical trials participate in relevant committees in order to promote the work of nurses working on clinical trials as well as support of academic studies across the department. The post holder will also be expected to have specialist skills and knowledge relating to the conduct of clinical trials, the therapies and disease site.

In addition to managerial responsibilities the post holder will occasionally work in clinical practice contributing to the clinical work of the research team as required. This will include education of patients and colleagues, screening and recruitment of eligible patients, coordination of care of patients on trials, collection and preparation of biological samples, collection of trial data, the administration of experimental agents and monitoring the expected and unexpected side effects of drugs and other treatment modalities. The post holder will act as a resource for multi-disciplinary staff and junior team members and be involved in education programmes and audit. The post holder will be expected to have sufficient skills to enable patients to make informed choices concerning their involvement in clinical trials by providing advice and information and acting as the patients advocate.

The post holder will work with the North Thames LCRN Research Lead to ensure all trials are run according to the protocol, current national law local guidelines and procedures following the principles of good clinical practice (GCP) and that all members of the research team are working within these frameworks.
