Belfast, United Kingdom Barnardo's Full time

Appointment type: Part time & Voluntary

Appointment term: 3 years with option to renew

Time commitment: Up to 10 days per year

About Barnardo's Northern Ireland

At Barnardo's NI, our purpose is clear - changing childhoods and changing lives, so that children, young people, and families are safe, happy, healthy, and hopeful.

Last year, we provided essential support to 18,000 children, young people, parents and carers through more than 40 services and partnerships across the country.

For more than 100 years, we've been here for the children and young people who need us most – bringing love, care and hope into their lives and giving them a place where they feel they belong.

Central to how we work are our four values:

  1. Inclusive: Respecting the unique worth of every person
  2. Supportive: Encouraging people to fulfil their potential
  3. Accountable: Encouraging responsible stewardship
  4. Positive: Working with hope

About the role

The National Advisory Board (NAB) maximises Barnardo's Northern Ireland's ability to change children's lives by providing strategic support and advice to the national executive and bringing their individual and collective skills, experience and networks to bear where opportunities present.

The post is not remunerated; however, reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Key activities:

  1. Providing targeted strategic support and advice to the national executive across the following areas in the national setting:
  • Implementation of Barnardo's corporate strategy;
  • Engagement with key external stakeholders;
  • Visiting our services and service users;
  • Fundraising activities;
  • Acting as ambassadors generally and on specific matters on request.
  • Identifying opportunities to raise Barnardo's profile and increase its influence among its key stakeholders.
  • Engaging with the Barnardo's UK CEO and Trustees in key areas including:
  • Key opportunities, risks or challenges requiring top level support;
  • Major planned updates to the corporate strategy.

What we're looking for

The successful candidate will be resident in Northern Ireland and bring real passion for the work that we do, coupled with experience in one or more of the areas below:

  • Experience in areas of service delivery aligned to our work with children & young people (e.g. Social Work, Education, Health, Police)
  • Fundraising
  • Policy formation, development and communication
  • Lived experience related to our work

What we're asking of you:

  • The NAB meets formally four times a year, usually in person at our Regional Office in Belfast.
  • There will be likely one or two additional formal meetings involving other colleagues from across Barnardo's to which NAB members would be invited.
  • At least one or two visits each year to different services in Northern Ireland, which could be anything ranging from a retail store, a residential service through to a family support service.
  • Uphold the Barnardo's Values and always act in accordance with Barnardo's Code of Conduct and NAB Terms of Reference.
