Main purpose of the job: The main purpose of this post is to support the Dean of School in leading and managing the work of the School/Faculty to deliver an excellent educational experience and outcomes for students, world-class research and knowledge exchange, and external partnerships. The main aim will be, working with your Deputy Dean of School counterpart, Dean of School, and relevant University leads, to coordinate strategies to successfully deliver an outstanding student experience within a robust research environment where academic colleagues flourish. The post holder will have experience of operational and line management and will be able to translate a well-rounded understanding of relevant research and teaching areas into strategic planning and leadership for the School/Faculty. You will work positively with the Dean of School and will have line management duties as required by the School/Faculty. Able to engage at a senior level with stakeholders including relevant accreditation and professional bodies, organisations and academic partners, the post holder will contribute to building a national and international profile with a clear mission to deliver world-class research and highly employable graduates. The School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment (CEBE) offers cutting edge and industry aligned education across computing, engineering and built environment disciplines. The school brings together innovation, sustainability, and professional education across these areas and fosters a culture of sustainability, digital innovation and professional relevance. The mission of CEBE is to educate students to design, build and manage the technologies and infrastructures that underpin future societies. Main duties and responsibilities: Academic Leadership and Management • Support the Dean of School in the strategic leadership, operational management and development of the School and deputise where appropriate. • Provide leadership in aspects of business and budget planning to promote the sustainability of the School. • Work with colleagues to deliver teaching that encompasses employer and skills-led experiential learning and professional development. • Provide oversight of the development and delivery of new programmes and new pathways for student learning, including apprenticeship degrees, accelerated degrees, credit accumulation and top-ups, multiple entry points, and blended and online at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. • To develop and promote effective and appropriate communication processes within the School and with others to ensure proper and timely information flow. • To foster a culture of cooperation, collaboration and mutual respect with all colleagues and stakeholders. • To champion a positive approach to equality, diversity and inclusion and encourage others to do so. • To manage relevant relationships with, or the requirements of, professional bodies, and other partners. • To provide oversight of the implementation of all relevant University strategies, policies and procedures in full, and appropriate guidelines are followed. Student Experience • Work with Dean of School and/or Head of Learning and Teaching to develop School strategies to deliver improvements to the student experience, in line with University strategy. • Work with the Dean of School and Head of Learning and Teaching to deliver improvements in student outcomes and retention. • To champion a positive approach to student diversity and inclusion and encourage others to do so. • To oversee systems for student engagement and involvement. Research/KE • Work with the Dean of School and/or the RKE lead to develop, promote and sustain excellence in research / KE. Staff Management • To work with the Dean of School in academic staff management processes such as probation, appraisals, workloads and promotions within the School. • To work with the Dean of School to ensure that academic staff resources are effectively and fairly deployed within the School. Health and Safety • To ensure the proper oversight of, and compliance with, legal, ethical and health and safety policies and procedures in line with University policies. Other • To maintain an academic/professional profile commensurate with the responsibilities of the post. • To work with the other Deputy Dean of School and key role holders to advise the Dean of School and to continue to enhance the academic reputation of the University. • To manage/coordinate specific projects as requested by the Dean of School. • Lead, participate in and develop external networks for the benefit of the University and appropriate areas of teaching, scholarship, research and knowledge transfer. • To engage in personal continuing professional development, maintaining skills and knowledge to carry out the role effectively. Additional Information • This role is employed within Roehampton Academic Education Limited, part of the University of Roehampton Group • There are no fixed hours of work and you are expected to give a full professional commitment and work for such reasonable hours as are necessary for you to fulfil your duties and responsibilities. You are expected to work flexibly to meet the needs of the University and Department, including evenings and weekends as required, within the context of the maximum working week as defined by the UK Working Time Regulations. • The appointment is usually made at the bottom of the salary range. Where a candidate’s current salary already exceeds the bottom point, consideration will be given to the level of skills, experience and profile that the candidate is bringing to the role. The salaries of other staff doing the same or similar work within the department who have similar skills, experience and profile should also be taken into account. • The appointment is offered on a permanent basis, subject to satisfactory references. • The annual leave entitlement is 31.5 days p.a., additionally there are 3 – 4 days when the university closes for Christmas. • The University of Roehampton is committed to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion.
