Overview The Design Museum’s Development department has an opportunity for a skilled and enthusiastic Senior Development Manager to join its busy and successful Philanthropy team. The role is a key one within the Development team and is responsible for growing and maintaining relationships with high level supporters. They will work directly with the Head of Philanthropy, Director of Development and senior volunteers and Trustees.

The post holder will work closely with the Head of Philanthropy and Development Director to deliver an ambitious individual giving strategy to develop and grow this increasingly important income stream for the museum. Working proactively to develop and manage individual donor relationships for the museum, strategically, creatively, and resourcefully, the appointed candidate will grow fundraising opportunities to drive forward financial growth. They will line manage the Development Executive.

To support the Development Director, Head of Philanthropy, and senior volunteers in identifying, initiating approaches, and securing gifts of four, five, and six figures with a view to growing income for the museum.
To develop dedicated supporters’ circles for specific projects.
To support the Development Director and Head of Philanthropy to develop legacy and core fundraising.

To nurture and cultivate donors to maximise their long-term giving to the museum.
To manage the development of an annual programme of events and unique opportunities, devised and delivered in collaboration with the Development Executive.
To work with the Development Director and Head of Philanthropy to develop and manage the network of Trustees and Senior Volunteers and to support and implement approaches to key prospects.
To ensure all contact with donors is appropriately recorded on the organisation’s CRM system.
To network effectively across the organisation to ensure that senior management and other colleagues are kept abreast of relevant department, to enable them to assist in the fundraising process as necessary.
To work with senior staff and Trustees on initiatives to mobilise the support of the design community for the museum and fundraising.

Undertake research and development for funding prospects and manage a personal donor and prospect portfolio.
Know and understand the longer-term financial strategy of the organisation and work with the Finance team and Head of Philanthropy to ensure the appropriate identification of funding needs and alignment of budgets.
Undertake rigorous financial record keeping, and lead on Gift Aid claims.
Working with the Marketing and Comms team, develop the individual giving fundraising presence on the website and in all digital communication.
Working with the wider Development team, liaise regularly with curators and other colleagues to understand funding needs and opportunities.
To ensure that the fundraising database is utilised appropriately, keeping information up-to-date and producing a range of essential reports.

Lead and inspire direct the Development Executive to achieve the highest level of performance and develop their skills and talents to enable them to reach their full potential.


Demonstrable evidence of a strategic, proactive, and creative approach to fundraising and development of fundraising opportunities.
Proven experience of building long-term effective relationships with high level individual stakeholders or senior volunteers.
A strong track record of building effective and productive relationships with people at all levels.
Numerate, with ability to prepare detailed financial analysis and reports.
IT literate, including intermediate knowledge of all Microsoft packages.

Experience of using CRM systems efficiently.


Holidays: 25 days + Christmas eve (museum closed) and Bank Holidays
Location: 60% on-site at the museum, 40% remote working
