The position of Head of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering (MPCE) is a key post in the Trust. We are seeking to appoint someone who is not only an excellent medical physicist or clinical engineer but an outstanding leader, manager and innovator with the skills and experience needed to operate at a senior level within the Trust, at the interface between the Trust and a leading Russell Group university, and across NHS systems locally and nationally. A strong clinical academic background would be an advantage, and a suitable candidate would be supported to apply for an appropriate honorary university title.

Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering has around 200 posts with a net annual revenue budget of around �13M and income of �1.7M from external contracts. It operates under an ISO 9001 quality system to provide a comprehensive range of scientific and technical services to the Trust and external organisations.

Main duties of the job

This senior post ensures that Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering provides a high quality and innovative medical physics and clinical engineering service to Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The Head of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering is responsible for leading and managing the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering service. The post holder ensures that appropriate and high quality services are delivered to patients and staff across the Trust. In addition, the post holder will be expected to manage within available resources. The post holder is also responsible for strategic and clinical service development, clinical and organisational governance, and research and development.

The post holder will additionally take on responsibility for areas of service or strategy delivery within the Directorate and/or across the Trust as appropriate to their skills, interests and experience. The post holder will also be involved in national professional activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications / Education

Essential

  • Good (1st or Upper 2nd class) Honours degree in a relevant subject
  • Relevant MSc or higher degree or equivalent
  • PhD or equivalent in Medical Physics or a related subject
  • IPEM Diploma or equivalent in Medical Physics or Medical Engineering
  • Corporate Membership or Fellowship of IPEM or another relevant professional body

Desirable

  • Management qualification or equivalent experience at Diploma or MBA level or equivalent

Professional / Statutory Registration

Essential

  • State Registration as a Clinical Scientist

Desirable

  • Significant national professional profile

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Broad experience of working in a number of areas in Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering
  • Recent successful record of achievement managing a significant function within Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, including a strategic leadership role
  • Engagement with multiple stakeholders in advancing the application of science and medical technology
  • Significant experience of business planning, financial management and the production of complex business cases

Desirable

  • Previous senior scientific role in a large teaching hospital or equivalent organisation
  • Successful implementation of new service delivery models
  • Leadership of research and development projects

  • Broad and well-developed knowledge across the whole field of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering
