About us

The Christchurch Call Foundation exists to coordinate the Christchurch Call’s work to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online. Our work is a key part of the response to the March 2019 attacks on the Christchurch mosques. The voluntary commitments in the Call are now being implemented by governments and online service providers, working within a multi-stakeholder community.


The Call is now supported by 56 governments, 19 online service providers, 12 partner organisations, and an Advisory Network of around 50 civil society organisations and researchers. The Call is based on shared values that set the bar for participation.


About the role

The Chief Policy and Strategy Officer is a key position in the Foundation’s leadership team. Leading the Policy and Strategy team, this role sets the strategic policy direction, driving the overall policy and strategic initiatives of the Foundation and influencing global policy. This role will engage and connect with our stakeholders around the world, as well as representing the Secretariat in international forums, and will be required to travel regularly to support this.


This role will also:

  • Coach, mentor and develop the Policy and Strategy team, enhancing individual and collective capability and quality
  • Provide thought leadership on complex, ambiguous policy issues with significant sensitivity and risk
  • Assist the Chief Executive in prioritising capacity among competing policy priorities, leading complex policy projects and programmes as needed
  • Ensure the effective delivery of policy products that enable timely and effective decision-making
  • Align policy programmes and products with Christchurch Call commitments and work programmes endorsed by Call community leaders


This role is a 12-month fixed term and as we’re moving towards being a global team, we’re comfortable for this role to be based anywhere in the world, with an initial focus on locations in USA, Europe, UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Asia.


About you

You will be a senior level manager or executive who is excited by our work and driven to make change and impact at a global level. Your background will be varied and will likely include experience in policy, academia, strategy, or technology, and you will have been involved in initiatives at a global level. You’ll bring credibility and gravitas that will enable you to engage with our wide-ranging stakeholders from within our community, the technology sector and across governments. You’ll be a natural problem solver, with an ability to understand complex systems and create constructive solutions.


You will also bring:

  • Understanding of current mechanisms and levers of policy, legal frameworks, and regulation to inform decision-making
  • Entrepreneurial skills with a natural problem-solving ability; you’re able to look at issues from more than just the policy angle
  • Expertise from within complex systems, ideally bringing an understanding of the intricacies, challenges, and opportunities of the Christchurch Call system
  • An ability to engage and align with our stakeholders to establish consensus on desired outcomes and objectives
  • Advocacy experience with an ability to lobby for policy and regulation changes
  • A diplomatic approach, building trusted relationships and leveraging connections
