Accessibility Specialist (Inside IR35)

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is responsible for welfare, pensions, and child maintenance policy. As the UK’s biggest public service department, it administers the State Pension and a range of working age, disability and ill health benefits to around 20 million claimants and customers. Working with DWP, you will be helping us to drive our priorities to:

  • Run an effective welfare system that enables people to achieve financial independence by providing assistance and guidance into employment
  • Increase saving for, and security in later life
  • Create a fair and affordable welfare system which improves the life chances of children
  • Deliver outstanding services to our customers and claimants
  • Deliver efficiently: transform the way we deliver our services to reduce costs and increase productivity


As an Accessibility Specialist your main responsibilities will be to:

  • Work with others to identify areas for improvement and simplify processes to use fewer resources. Use technology where possible to increase efficiency. Encourage ideas for change from a wide range of sources. Clearly explain the reasons for change to colleagues and how to implement them, supporting individuals with different needs to adapt to change. Encourage an environment where colleagues know that they can challenge decisions and issues safely. Take managed risks by fully considering varied impacts changes could have on the diverse range of end users. (Level 3)
  • Understand the strategic drivers for your area of work. Align activities to contribute to wider organisational priorities. Remain alert to emerging issues and trends which might impact on your work area. Seek out and share experiences to develop knowledge of the team's business area. Understand how the strategies and activities of the team create value and meet the diverse needs of all stakeholders. (Level 3)
  • As a M365 Accessibility Specialist the postholder will have a firm understanding of Microsoft 365 and the windows systems and the Accessibility opportunities they present


You’ll have relevant experience in:

  • The postholder will be able to work with the Team’s design and branding standards to deliver accessible and engaging learning material. Experience in providing written education and the ability to deliver presentations where required is essential
  • Strong accessibility knowledge
  • Ability to collaborate with external partners and vendors to ensure third-party integrations and tools used with Microsoft 365 are accessible
  • Experience with the use of tools such as Microsoft Accessibility Checker, screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA), and other assistive technologies to evaluate the accessibility of documents and applications
  • Ability to provide training and support to users on how to use accessibility features in Microsoft 365 applications
