Senior Electrochemist Engineer

INITION have developed a breakthrough battery production technology that dramatically decreases production costs and eliminates toxic solvents. We are located at the Culham Innovation Centre where we have installed our pilot line and are now building our team. This role is a unique opportunity to take a lead in driving technology that will transform the entire battery industry.
WHO YOU ARE
You are a hands-on, team-oriented electrochemist with an aptitude for learning new things and a desire to innovate lithium-ion battery technologies. You will focus on designing slurry and coating strategies and optimizing the performance of our electrodes in state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. You will be working cross-functionally with scientists, equipment engineers, mechanical engineers, and technicians, so mental flexibility and collaborative problem-solving abilities are required. You have a comprehensive range of technical know-how, a versatile cooperative skill set, and a resilient passion to bring our technology to market.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Design innovative slurry and coating strategies using a breadth of scientific knowledge in materials science and engineering.
- Develop slurry and electrode characterization techniques to determine formulation-performance relationships and offer chemical and cell level corrective strategies.
- Develop lithium-ion batteries using innovative manufacturing techniques.
- Assembly, testing, and analysis of coin and pouch cell formats to evaluate electrode performance in lab/pilot-line scale.
- Generate technical reports for projects, effectively communicate ideas and results internally across the INITION team and externally to customers and partners.
- Proactively invest in our company values and vision and champion them as we grow.
- Collaboratively engage with INITION fellows on cross-functional projects.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENT
- 5+ years of industry or lab experience (fewer for candidates with an advanced degree).
- Master's degree in Chemistry, Physics, materials science, or related discipline.
- Industry experience in lithium-ion batteries for both laboratory and commercial grade cells.
- Hands-on experience in electrode formulation, slurry preparation, electrode casting and cell teardown with advanced lithium-ion materials.
- Skilled in electrochemical and material characterization techniques such as electrochemical tests, SEM, EDX, BET and TGA.
- Well-organised and practical approach to problem solving, driven by curiosity and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly master new technologies and independently drive improvement.
- Exceptional communication skills and demonstrated collaboration abilities.
- Strong data-driven experimental design skills and an analytical ability to evaluate from first-principles understanding.
