One my key clients is currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated Team Lead Mechanical Design Engineer (Powertrain) to lead their dynamic team. My client is a technical consultancy that specialise in the EV & Motorsport sector, helping major OEMS solve their technical problems.
Role: Mechanical Design Team Lead (Powertrain)
Salary: £70k to £75k
Location: Northamptonshire
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage teams within your area of expertise, ensuring they are properly resourced with the necessary subject knowledge and that research and engineering outputs are accurately documented and traceable.
- Oversee subsystem-level design reviews within your area of expertise.
- Review and approve design evidence, including design calculations, reference data with sources, correspondence, tolerance stacks, clearance checks, and test reports, ensuring it is properly recorded for design reviews.
- Approve customer documentation to ensure the safe, reliable setup, usage, and maintenance of components and systems in service.
- Approve Statements of Work, Interface Agreements, and Collaboration Management Plans for outsourced work packages.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and design authority for major engineering systems or development processes/techniques.
- Assist the department head in costing, planning, and generating proposals for new projects.
- Approve and release designs for purchase or manufacture in accordance with the RML engineering release procedure.
- Present design concepts, status updates, and supporting evidence to demonstrate robust design solutions to internal teams, suppliers, and external clients.
- Review Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) of systems and components.
- Develop and maintain Engineering Guides, Procedures, and Standards in your area of expertise, ensuring that knowledge is captured for the development of safe, reliable, cost-effective, legal, and competitive solutions.
- Familiarize yourself with and apply relevant RML Procedures, Standards, and Engineering Guides to ensure work is completed efficiently.
- Utilize the RML 5C Concerns Process to capture and track engineering concerns, ensuring efficient, accurate, and robust solutions are implemented in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with the wider engineering team and purchasing to optimize design at all levels.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Proven leadership experience, with a track record of successfully leading engineering teams.
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX) and engineering simulation tools (e.g., FEA, CFD).
- Strong knowledge of powertrain components and systems, including internal combustion engines, electric drivetrains, transmissions, and hybrid systems.
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex engineering challenges.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Knowledge of automotive industry standards and regulations is a plus.
