Location: EdStart Schools, Wallasey Wirral

Contract Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: From £33,560

Our Values

At EdStart, our principal values are Progression—we are committed to helping every student achieve their fullest potential, regardless of their individual challenges. Further to this we uphold the values of Humanity, Togetherness, and Compassion, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for both students and staff.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds and encourage individuals to apply regardless of sex, race, religion, belief, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, pregnancy, maternity, age, disability, marriage, or civil partnership.

About the role

EdStart Schools is seeking an experienced and compassionate Maths Teacher to work with KS3 and KS4 students with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges. This rewarding role involves delivering differentiated, engaging Maths lessons that meet the individual academic and emotional needs of students who may have faced barriers to learning in mainstream settings.

In addition to teaching, this position offers the opportunity to train as a SENCO in the role of assistant SENCO. You will support the SENCO in managing SEN provision, developing interventions, maintaining provision maps, and liaising with outside agencies. This is a unique chance to grow professionally while making a meaningful impact on our students' academic and personal development at EdStart Schools.

What is the role of an Assistant SENCO?

Assist in managing Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision, ensuring high-quality teaching, effective resource use, and high standards of learning and achievement for all pupils.

Assistant SENCO Responsibilities:

  • Support SEN provision, including allocating support time and writing SEN paperwork.
  • Liaise with outside agencies to ensure effective SEN support.
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping and GDPR compliance for meetings with parents and agencies.
  • Advise staff on SEN strategies and ensure that pupil profiles and plans are used to set targets.
  • Promote an inclusive curriculum and provide guidance on teaching methods for SEN pupils.
  • Keep parents/carers informed about their child's SEN provision.
  • Monitor the progress of SEN pupils and provide updates to the SENCO.
  • Support meetings and communication with SEN staff and coordinate actions.
  • Assist with access arrangements and deputize for the SENCO in their absence.
  • Maintain the SEN Register and assist with updating pupil records and paperwork.
  • Attend meetings as directed by the SENCO.
  • Adhere to child protection policies and ensure accurate tracking of interventions and their impact.

Training Information

The Assistant SENCO training is designed for teachers aiming to specialise in SEND, or those aspiring to take on a SENCO role. The program equips participants with the leadership skills and expertise needed to navigate the evolving SEND landscape and implement inclusive practices. To apply, candidates must have a Teacher Reference Number, at least two years of teaching experience, and the opportunity to apply their learning within a school setting. Those unsure about meeting the requirements can seek guidance from the program team.

The DfE’s NPQ for SENCO framework is based on a robust method of design and development, building on the evidence base and expert guidance already established in the ECF and the ITT Core Content Framework.

Maths Teacher Key responsibilities:

  • To maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the teaching of your subject(s) and take account of wider curriculum and pastoral developments which are relevant to your work.

  • To use a range of appropriate strategies and follow schools policies for tutoring, teaching, behaviour management and classroom management
  • To do all you can, involving parents and other agencies, to ensure that as a result of your tutoring and teaching you promote the health, safety, economic wellbeing and achievement of your students.
  • To assess, monitor and record the progress of students in your teaching and tutorial groups and give them clear and constructive feedback.
  • To set well-grounded expectations for students in your teaching and tutorial groups using information about prior knowledge and previous attainment, making progress as good as or better than similar students nationally.
  • To take responsibility for your own professional development and use the outcomes to improve your tutoring and teaching and your students’ learning.
