Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will support AIE in designing and verifying new innovations for the Wankel Rotary Engine power units supplied to Customers within the aerospace transport and power generation markets. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting stress analysis, communicating the results and advising on all aspects of structural engineering activities.

As part of the close-knit team, the Stress/Structural Engineer will be expected to perform the following tasks:

Stress/Structural Activities

  • Interpret and translate Customer and Product requirements to system and component specifications.
  • Analyse and assess mechanical designs for strength, fatigue, durability, performance and safety against regulatory and customer requirements using finite element techniques and classical hand calculations.
  • Support the selection of manufacturing technologies and aerospace materials based on a sound understanding of material physical and mechanical properties and the mechanical fit, form and function of the product.
  • Take ownership of all stress/structural related activities for particular projects through all stages of the product lifecycle for concept to production and beyond.
  • Technical stress authority and signatory for document approval.
  • Develop and maintain common processes and procedures relating to stress engineering activities.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislative, regulatory and contractual requirements (based on recognised military/civil standards).
  • Determine design options and develop appropriate verification strategies to demonstrate system/component compliance with specifications, industry standards and legislative demands
  • Ability to perform route cause analysis to determine appropriate design action required.
  • Determine appropriate load cases and boundary conditions
  • Confirm structural integrity of engine components when subject to operational loads – thermal, dynamic and combustion
  • Confirm structural integrity of mounting interfaces and load-bearing systems when subject to shock and drop loads.
  • Conduct topology optimisation studies to optimise engine system weight.
  • Conduct bearing life studies and, based on findings, develop improvement strategies and designs
  • Conduct studies for ancillaries and mounting frames as warranted by the application and project
  • Interface with design engineers to ensure an accurate transfer and implementation of ideas

Experience and Qualification Summary

  • Master or higher Degree in a Physics or Engineering discipline.
  • Proven experience in the use of Finite Element Analysis software tools (preferably Ansys) and techniques.
  • Working evidence on the application of a wide range of classical hand calculation techniques for static and dynamic loading conditions, fatigue and fracture assessment.
  • Experience of environmental test methods for design verification and working knowledge of design certification for land based and airborne equipment.
  • Knowledge of material properties appropriate for engine and ancillary systems.
  • Understanding of IC engine operation.
