The Chief Technology Officer will join a strong leadership team and will formulate and oversee technological direction, innovation, and strategic initiatives. Specifically, over the next 12 months and beyond, this will include supporting the business through a significant period of change and transformation as they look to diversify towards cloud-based managed services and software. This is a fantastic opportunity for a high energy and entrepreneurial Director, VP or CTO to join an already successful business leveraging a proven model and brand and, as the technology visionary, to lead innovation alongside outstanding senior technical colleagues and to build products which will determine their future direction and success.


About the Role


  • Develop, implement and manage the product diversification transformation programme towards cloud-based managed services and software (AWS, Azure, IBM etc).
  • Lead and manage technology team and services, developing the capabilities and skills for product creation, enhancement and support – both internally through line management and coaching direct reports, and externally by selecting and managing external suppliers. This includes line management responsibility for senior technologists; R&D; Product Management; Technical Support; IT.
  • Define, stand-up, operate, harden and optimise the network infrastructure required to deliver services and software to critical services organisations.
  • Communicate technology strategy to internal & external stakeholders including Board members, shareholders, industry bodies and anchor customers.
  • Foster a culture of excellence and innovation, driving faster development cycles through optimised Agile and DevOps methodologies, and exploring cutting-edge technologies and their realisation as monetised services and products.
  • Secure a good understanding of customer and competitors’ plus strategic and operational priorities to identify opportunities to commercialise and monetise current and future products and services.
  • Develop and maintain general IT architecture and infrastructure including core business systems.


Overall responsibility for:


  • Cloud system Infrastructure
  • Develop, track, and control the annual operating and capital budgets for technology systems, product development and cloud infrastructure operations.
  • Act as Data Protection Officer with responsibility for data protection compliance including GDPR.


About You:


  • With a background in telecommunications or related industry, you have delivered transformation initiatives driving cloud adoption or product diversification.
  • You have deep experience of cloud platforms, cloud architectures, cloud migration strategies, hybrid cloud models, FOG computing and computing and multi-cloud models as this is central to product diversification.
  • Specifically, extensive experience with cloud-based managed services and software - AWS, Azure, IBM etc. and associated security standards suitable for Public Sector (Cyber Essentials+ and ISO27001 etc.)
  • Experience with wireless communications 4G, 5G, Satellite, TETRA, P25)
  • Experience with Edge / IoT technologies eg MQTT of interest
  • Experience leading distributed technical teams through agile development methodologies
  • Security is paramount in cloud-based telecommunications, so the CTO must be well-versed in relevant cybersecurity and compliance standards.
  • Since cloud product diversification involves significant business model changes, you will need strong business skills and organisational change management.
  • A proven track record of innovation and staying ahead of technological trends, you will keep a close eye on strategic market activity @ cloud infrastructure topics including public sector cloud adoption initiatives; emerging communications technologies to ensure maximum opportunity and minimum risk to the mission and vision.
  • Ideally, experience working within start-up or scale-up companies.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or related fields.
  • A major plus - advanced business education (MBA or Executive Management Programs).
