Job description

Job responsibilities

The Dental Practitioner will discharge responsibilities and undertake duties for the fulfillment of the Dental contracts, to include:

*Provision of dental treatment for patients with additional needs within a clinic or on a domiciliary basis

*Provide clinical input into the Mobile Dental Service, working within targeted schools, including Special schools, in North Solihull

*Supervision of dental students in accordance with current working regulations.

*Participation in epidemiological surveys as required

*Communicate and liaison with the patient, their families, advocates, health and care staff as necessary.

*Participate in appraisal, training and personal development activities as identified.

*Contribute and participate in governance activities including clinical governance and audit.

*Contribute to the future planning and development of Solihull Special Care Dental Service (SSCDS).

*Day to day management of immediate clinical environment.

*Participate in the training of other staff both within the dental team and other health, education and social care professionals. This may include undergraduate dental or therapy students from the University of Birmingham

*Maintain ethical and safe standards and adhere to operational policies relating to SSCDS and University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust

*Maintain confidentiality of personal health data.

*Make effective and efficient use of resources.

Specific role will be subject to agreement dependent on skills, expertise, personal development and the needs of the service.

Participate in the training of other staff both within the dental team and other health, education and social care professionals. This may include undergraduate dental or therapy students from the University of Birmingham.

Qualifications

Essential

Primary dental qualification and full registration with the General Dental Council; completed vocational training or equivalent.

Experience

Essential

Broad based clinical experience in primary dental care. Has an up-to-date knowledge of the current issues and developments in Special care and/or paediatric dentistry. A portfolio of continuing professional development including CPD relevant to the post. Knowledge of the principles of clinical governance and its application to dentistry.

Desirable

Experience of providing a range of dental treatment utilising developed skills in Paediatric or Special Care Dentistry, including domiciliary care or inhalation sedation. Experience of working within community dental service Experience of participating in epidemiological surveys Has knowledge of programmes to prevent oral disease and promote healthy lifestyles, supporting patients, their families and carers. Knowledge of the role and function of salaried primary care dental services and current developments in NHS dentistry and the NHS in general.

Patient examination and diagnosis: Undertakes thorough examination and assessment of patients. Treatment planning and patient management: Plans and manages care for a range of patients. Health promotion and Disease Prevention: Able to plan, develop, implement and evaluation appropriate interventions to prevent disease and promote health for individual patients. Medical and dental emergencies: Can identify commonly occurring medical emergencies and led the dental tem in the appropriate first line management of the emergency, using appropriate techniques, equipment and drugs. Anaesthesia, sedation and pain control: Uses appropriate local anaesthetic and patient management approaches to control pain and anxiety during dental treatment Periodontal therapy and management of soft tissue: Undertakes the diagnosis, selection of appropriate periodontal techniques and delivery of periodontal care in an effective way.

Trained in and able to use sedation where required.
