About the role

Balfour Beatty is currently recruiting a Principal Cable Design Engineer to join the Power T&D team.

We are open to both full time and part time candidates (including job share), and offer a flexible working policy.

Role Purpose:

To deliver such design calculations, engineering drawings and documents that enable a safe and constructable engineered
solution. Reports to the Design Delivery Manager CSED.

What you'll be doing

Key Duties:

Assume the role of lead Civil Engineer (Cable Systems) for complex and non-standard projects as directed by the Design Delivery Manager - CSED.
Analyse and understand contract documents to determine scope of works, design parameters/methodologies, engineering programme, and budget.
Ensure projects are delivered to the engineering manager in accordance with the agreed scope of works, design parameters/methodologies, engineering programme and budget.
Approve design deliverables completed and checked by others as per delegation of authority.
Review designs and design calculations produced by other engineers or apprentices to ensure the designs are appropriate and can be manufactured and constructed safely in accordance with contract documents and/ or current best practice.
Produce appropriate designs and design calculations for review by a principal/senior structural design engineer, that can be manufactured and constructed safely in accordance with contract documents and/ or current best practice, and ensure all associated drawings produced represent the design as intended.
Embed Safety and Sustainability by Design in all designs ensuring compliance with CDM regulations.
Assist in the analysis and resolution of complex and non-standard design issues.
Communicate as required with other business functions, consultants, clients, and operational teams to ensure projects are delivered to the agreed scope of works, design parameters/methodologies, engineering programme and budget.
Visit operational sites and other offices to discuss design issues and to develop solutions to operational issues.
Analyse and understand tender documents to produce engineering tenders for review by engineering managers, that, state the scope of work to be undertaken, identify the engineering tasks and associated cost allocations, develop the engineering programme, and identify any significant risk.
Identify, deliver, and undertake training as required to enable effective achievement of objectives.
Mentor and coach others from the structural and the wider engineer team.
Liaise with engineering managers, principal structural design engineers, senior structural design engineers and other engineers or apprentices as required.
Support the Chief Engineer CSED, to drive technical improvement, and identify innovation and development opportunities.
Act as a delegate for the Design Delivery Manager - CSED as required.
Undertake other such duties as may be required by the Design Delivery Manager - CSED.

Interacts with:

Internal design team, suppliers/manufacturers, construction teams, internal/external clients, CDM Principal Designer.

Who we're looking for

Qualifications\Skills Required:

Bachelors Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or equivalent. Excellent structural analysis skills, ability to solve problems from first principles. Good communication skills, able to communicate effectively at all levels. Experience of Cable Systems design and installation in the context of Civil Engineering activities. Appreciation of UK Cable Systems design standards; appreciation of UK Civil Engineering design standards generally.

Appreciation of methods of computer aided design and BIM practice
