Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Infection Prevention and Control Team at Wrightington , Wigan, and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust for an enthusiastic Senior Infection control Nurse to work in our team.

The post holder will provide Infection Prevention and Control advice to the Trust, patients, and all healthcare employees of Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust. Working with the Director and Deputy Director Infection Prevention and Control and the Infection Control Doctors, the post holder will be the day-to-day co-ordinator and clinical nurse lead for the delivery of an effective, efficient, and quality service for the prevention, surveillance and prevention and control of infection across the Trust, including both Community and Hospital settings.

The post encompasses a significant level of nursing education, training and leadership responsibilities for the Infection Prevention and Control Nurses in co-ordinating the above.

The post holder will be a key member of the Infection Prevention and Control Team and of the Trust Infection Prevention and Control Group, and as such will play a major role in the provision of the Infection Prevention and Control Nursing Service within the Trust.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work as a key member of the Infection Prevention and control team (IPC) and clinical colleagues to monitor infection control rates and take forward actions and changes necessary to reduce the incidence.

Provide leadership to the IPC Programme across the areas operational services delivery.

Make a significant contribution to the work lead by the Chief Nurse/Director of IPC and Deputy Director IPC (DDIPC) to ensure the Trust enhances its compliance with The Health and social care Act 2008.

To work in collaboration with Estates and Facilities colleagues to provide assurance around compliance with the legislation and regulatory requirements including but not restricted to Health technical memorandum (HTM), Health Building Notes (HBN) as applicable with Trust Estates and Facilities.

Be responsible for coordination of IPC nurses in the prevention, surveillance and control of infection throughout the Trust as a member of the IPC team and act in the absence of the IPC nurses accordingly.

Provide specialist IPC advice and expertise to the multi-disciplinary team Trust personnel.

Due to the retirement of the current post holder Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Hospitals Foundation Trust, an exciting opportunity has arisen within the Infection Prevention and Control Team for a Band 8a Lead Infection Prevention and Control Nurse.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, dynamic and innovative senior Infection Prevention and Control Nurse to work within the current team to ensure an effective, efficient and quality service is provided to the Trust, which includes community services. The post encompasses significant high level nursing education, training and leadership responsibilities and will require the individual to work autonomously much of the time.

The post holder will be a key member of the Infection Prevention and Control Team and of the Infection Prevention and Control Meetings and will play a major role in the provision of the infection prevention and control nursing service across the Trust. The post holder will lead and line-manage other nursing and administration members in the team.

The post holder will need to be self-motivated, experienced in infection prevention and control, have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be a strong leader. They need to be able to influence others, prioritise workloads, lead and implement change and have a flexible approach.

They need to have evidence of working at degree level and have completed post registration qualifications in Infection Control or equivalent. Applicants should also have had a comprehensive general nursing background, experience of managing others, and evidence of developing and delivering audits and teaching packages. The successful candidate will also be required to take part in the on-call rota.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

Minimum of 2 years Experience in IPC (with evidence of working at Band 7). Practising 1st level Registered Nurse. Current/valid registration with the NMC. Recognised Teaching Qualification Eg. C & GLI Certificate or ENB998. ENB 329/Management of Infection and Control Service or equivalent or equivalent experience. Evidence of continuing personal and professional development. Mentorship qualification.

Desirable

Research and Counselling qualifications. Recognised Food Hygiene or Decontamination Qualification. An Estates /Facilities qualification. Evidence of Masters level study or working towards.

Experience

Essential

Experience using IT systems and relevant software. Experience in clinical audit and benchmarking. Experience in completing audit programmes successfully. Experience in teaching in formal and informal settings. Broad experience within Infection Prevention and Control, preferable experience of managing a team. Change Management experience. Project Management. Diverse nature of unpredictable workload. Frequent re-prioritisation of own clinical workload necessitated by unforseen external circumstances outbreaks. Gather information support of frequent audits by external agencies on the level of Infection Prevention and Control. Compliance with National guidance eg NHS England, NHS Improvement, CPA Accreditatation.

Desirable

Interest and experience in basic epidemiology and research. Experience working as a nurse in the community.

Skills

Essential

Evidence of excellent verbal and written communication skills. Leadership skills to develop strong links with others inside and outside the NHS. Time Management. Ability to deal sensitively with difficult situations. Experience in the Use of computers to access internet for research and other software. eg laboratory results and patient access systems systems and MS Office for report writing and presentations. Frequent dealing with patients , relatives and customer complaints.

Knowledge

Essential

Have sound, demonstratable knowledge base of up-to-date Infection Prevention and Control principles and their application. Have a sound knowledge base of epidemiology and clinical application. Wide knowledge of Trust policies and adaptation. Broad Nursing knowledge and managerial experience at ward/departmental level. Interpretation of Trust Policies and adaptation at user level and interaction with the user to ensure compliance. Accreditation (CQC) and revalidation knowledge and experience.

Desirable

Knowledge of the Estates function within an NHS Organisation. Knowledge and interest in ventilation in water safety, medical gases and decontamination.

Essential

Speak English to an appropriate standard relevant to their role ie with confidence and accuracy, using correct sentence structures and vocabulary, and without hesitation. Self-Motivated Resourceful. Ability to lead and implement change. Contact with hazardous materials. Ability to travel between sites.
